KAKA SAHEB DIXIT - The devotee par-excellence of Baba

The word ‘faith’ is the most difficult word to explain but most easily used by people in the context of ethics or religion or spiritualism. If this word is to be understood as a state of mind, it would mean holding on to a concept or an individual embodying that concept which one thinks is so true that one can unquestioningly rely on it, no matter what. Once that conviction, usually grown through a series of experiences has set-in then there is no further questioning on that. The only thing is to be guided by it under all circumstances.

Let us think, of a child say a boy, facing a mirror for the first time after birth. How would he react? He may be awed or surprised or happy to see the image in the mirror. He may try to touch the nose, eyes and face of the image. He may laugh at seeing his own image, which would seem funny to him without realising that it is his own image.

These initial reactions may continue for some days. But as he gets older and experienced with the mirror he will not be awed, surprised or happy to see his image in the mirror. He will only see his face and clean it or comb his hair etc. Before picking up a mirror no grown up person has the slightest thought or doubt that the mirror might or might not reflect his image because there is an intrinsic faith in the capacity of a mirror to reflect. In science, it is easier to have faith, say on the law of gravity i.e. if I release an object from my hand it will fall on the ground due to gravity in a natural course of events.

But this word ‘faith’ cannot be used in the context of ethics, moral, a deity, God or Sadguru, in the same manner. It cannot be a mere intellectual or a habitual exercise. It is much more than that. Lack of understanding of this basic concept leads to lots of confusion in the minds of the devotees who think that they have faith. This is the biggest problem facing the devotees.
Many devotees are heard saying that they have ‘faith in Baba’, ‘full faith in Baba’ or are ‘surrendered’.

Would one ask them as to why and how they got this faith for Baba, the general replies are that Baba had asked (often quoted from books like Shri Sai Satcharitra) his devotees to surrender to Him or that Dixit, Megha, Mahalsapaty, the famous devotees, did so, or that in their difficult times they prayed to Baba and got the required help and, therefore, think that Baba will help them when ever they desire to avoid painful situations or pray for desirable happenings.

Some of them are even seen to criticise other devotees for not having as much faith as they have and thereby enjoy a sense of spiritual superiority as if they and not Baba have the right and capacity to pass such value judgements on such matters.

No doubt at different stages of spiritual progress ‘faith’ has relative connotations but at the highest stage of spirituality there can only be one truth one definition and one experience about it. It is difficult or rather naive to believe that what Baba held to be ‘faith’ is said differently by Akkalkot Maharaj or Baba Tazzuddin of Nagpur.

But many people, due to their ignorance, pride or a habit of using certain words, try to project as if they have realised “the ultimate” meaning and experience of faith when it is merely ‘relative’ i.e. certain level of faith only. Even Baba, when he was in his physical embodiment at Shirdi was aware of such limitations on the part of his devotees. He used to test the faith of his most beloved and protected devotees from time to time. ".........

Q & A

When Baba gives His grace equally to all, why cannot all devotees progress in the spiritual path equally?

Sadguru cannot leave His devotees under any circumstances whether the devotee realizes it or not. That is why Baba used to say that one should pray always to Him with Shraddha and Saburi. Whenever the grace of Sai descends upon anybody usually it is seen that his negative qualities reduce and good qualities grow.

From those initial experiences only, some of the devotees think that they have reached somewhere in the spiritual plane or they have achieved spiritual knowledge. Taking this initial state of things to be the final state of achievement such people start behaving like Guru and collect disciples.

Many people cannot progress because of this and try to live an artificial life. Those who conduct themselves in a normal way after receiving Baba’s grace never exhibit the prowess of the devotion; they gradually achieve closeness with Baba. Nourishing spiritual and religious ambitions is a limitation in the path of spiritual evolution. Some people even after getting the grace of Baba to solve their problem again commit deliberate mistakes because of greed, anger or jealousy. Their growth gets delayed.

BABA MAY I ANSWER book by Shri C. B. Satpathy released on Ram Navami For details see www.heritageofshirdisai.org

……"Baba's saying, 'I am not at Shirdi', when he was actually staying with them at the Mosque, was another instance of humour combined with great spiritual truth. By his statement that he was not at Shirdi, he wished to convey that he was not the physical body seen at Shirdi, but the real personality, which is a divine Force, present everywhere, especially in the hearts of all people.

Baba meanwhile enjoyed the puzzled looks of people who thought that he was talking untruth by denying his presence at Shirdi. This was especially the case with a local lady, who could not understand what Baba meant by his words to Mrs. R.A. Tarkhad. Baba said to the latter, 'Mother, I am going thrice a day to your house in Bandra. Is it not?' and that lady said, 'Yes'.

The local lady said, 'We are seeing Baba here everyday, and how could he go thrice a day to Bandra, which is 100 miles away'. But Baba said, 'I go to that house'. He then gave a description of the route, etcetra. The local lady did not understand that Baba was referring to his travelling in his linga sarira to his devotees places and accepting the naivedyas, offered there.

Another practical joke played by Baba for effecting good was the following. Kaka Mahajani was suffering from diarrhoea. He had frequent motions and so he had to carry with him a vessel lota of water. He had come to the Mosque along with the lota of water, Baba knew very well his condition and when Kaka was there, he suddenly got into a rage and uttered words and acted in such a furious way that all the people took to their heels.

In the rush and bustle someone seated at the mantap eating groundnuts left the groundnuts and fled for life. Kaka Mahajani thought that he must also go away. He was proceeding to take his vessel in order to move away. But Baba quietly came down to him and asked him to sit.

Then they took up the groundnuts left by that stranger, and both of them consumed the groundnuts, and drank water. Now groundnut and water is hardly the best treatment for diarrhoea. In ordinary cases, it would accelerate diarrhoea and make the man miserable. But in this case, Baba said, 'Your anus be closed', and the discharge ceased. Kaka Mahajani was cured. Baba had used his apparent fury for the purpose of securing groundnuts for his devotee.

Another humorous incident has already been mentioned. When Mr. Sadasiva Tarkhad who was not employed came to Baba hoping to find employment with Baba's aid, Baba suddenly ordered him to go back to Poona in company with Tatya Patil and others' who were going to Ahmednagar to see a film.

This looked very cruel and heartless, nay horrid, to send the man back without a job and asking him to go and attend to amusements, when there was no provision for him to earn his bread. But he went with them to Ahmednagar and thence to Poona. At Poona he found that a local mill needed a manager badly, as the labourers had given trouble and a capable manager was wanted. The mill authorities had been sending telegrams to find out where Sadasiva Tarkhad was. Baba knew of it, and had yet humorously omitted to inform him sending him back in time to get the mill managership.

One day a very old goat, just on the eve of death strayed into the Mosque mantap. Baba asked Bade Baba to cut it with a knife. Bade Baba's heart revolted against this needless cruelty, and he left the Mosque. Baba asked Shama to fetch a knife from Ayi and kill it. Ayi sent the knife, but learning that it was for killing the dying goat, recalled the knife.

Again.Shama professing to go out for another knife decamped. Baba was enjoying the humour all the time. Then he sent for H.S. Dixit, and asked him to fetch a knife and kill it. Dixit was the soul of obedience to Baba, and he was very intimately attached to Baba So he took up a knife in his hand and asked Baba, 'Shall I kill it?' 'Yes’, said Baba.

Then he still hesitated Baba said, 'Why are you hesitating?' Then Dixit determined to kill it, for with him, obedience to Baba was superior to sympathy for creatures. As Dixit was just lowering his knife over the head of the animal, Baba suddenly stopped him, and said. 'Do not kill the animal.

I will myself kill it'. Then he took up the animal over his shoulders and walked a few paces. The creature then breathed its last. Baba knew full well what was going to happen and was only enjoying the fun, and also testing the mental development of devotees. This test showed the perfection of Dixit's devotion.

There are many more instances of Baba's humour, but it seems to be hardly necessary to labour the point. Baba like every other human being appreciated a humourous situation and he indulged in the humour not merely because it was natural but also because the human side must be presented to devotees along with his divine side so that they may be able to have the courage to grasp the Baba personality.

Without the human, the divine part of Baba's personality could not be so well grasped and utilised by the devotees."........

I don’t entirely agree with the way some people predict human life, as nothing but a miserable, painful, hopeless existence driven by Maya; where wants and desires are never ending and a man crave for more and more without any satisfaction.

I would like to ask all such people who think along similar lines, just one question: Why would Baba send his children to suffer pain and misery if human life was that bad?

Hasn’t anyone thought that all humans may come on earth with a purpose and their presence on this lovely, lively, wonderful planet is not just mere coincidence or chance but they are here to fulfill certain tasks assigned to them by the Almighty. And, also to enjoy and appreciate His creation, and work their way forward by becoming better human beings by their every action and thereby getting closer to self realization day by day.

Those who think only about negative aspects of human life show their lack of trust and faith in the creator. Since we are the smartest species on the planet why not utilize human knowledge and skills to improve the living condition of fellow human beings and other less fortunate species?

Spiritual development and day to day work should be two faces of same coin and not two separate coins. If all acts are done with a thought of dedicating them to Baba, there will not be any sense of doership associated with the task, hence no ego either and then even a family man can progress towards the path of self realization while successfully performing his daily duties as ordained and expected by the human society.

Just as one cannot appreciate the warmth of sun if one has not experienced cold, similarly happiness and joy has no meaning if one doesn’t know sadness or pain. To a man away from home, happiness comes when he is with family and friends. To a spiritual person, spiritual discourse and songs of praise of the creator give happiness, whereas talk of atheists causes pain.

So to say that sadness or pain doesn’t serve any purpose will not be a correct statement, as it may help a person appreciate the blessings he has received or will get in time to come. What is needed is Shradhha and Saburi. One can go through all phases of life successfully by believing that Baba is always watching His children and there is nothing to fear.

That is to say that one should try to do his very best in the situation he is in, invoke Baba in all thoughts and acts, enjoy the beautiful creation, give his small contribution to human development and try to live a contented life.

I really do not know how to thank Baba as I was jobless for 3 years and He has placed me as a Medical Superintendent at a leading hospital in Chennai. Baba has proved that He is always with His devotees. This job came from out of the blue. On Wednesday April 8th evening, I got a call from the Medical Superintendent of a Hospital that had interviewed me earlier, to say that one of their consultant doctors also ran a Hospital.

He was having trouble with the administration related tasks and was also being swindled and needed help. I was asked to meet them the following day at 12 noon, i.e. Thursday 9th, Pournima day. I was very excited and felt this was Baba's call, for everything was so significantly related to Baba- the no.9, the day and Purnima.

I met them at noon April 9th and was told that they would take me to see the Hospital at 4 pm. This gave me time to go to the Sai Temple, Mylapore, where I just poured my heart out to Baba and had a good darshan. After this I was taken to the Hospital and was briefed on my role there and realized this would need damage control.

I was assured that there would be expansion of the Hospital after a year and we agreed on a salary to be reviewed after 3 months. Further, I was told I could continue my present practice or relocate myself closer to the Hospital and take over a clinic of his also, as my own. A few days earlier I had been to see another Hospital and the Chairman offered me a much higher salary, but I would have to leave Chennai, though here there would be job security.

Even though there was no job security at the Chennai Hospital, I looked at this as Baba's Blessing and believed that He would take care of me. I forgot the risks involved, for Baba's portrait is there at the hospital, like telling Shama that he will be at Prayag ahead of him!! What more do I want, to have Baba himself as my boss protecting me !!

And all this happened when some astrologers told me that I will be jobless and suffer for another 1year, some even told me 3 years !!

The next morning I went to Mylapore Sai Temple and placed the appointment letter at Baba's Feet. Then in the evening, went to Injambakkam Sai Temple, again to get Baba's blessings. It was my Birthday too, and the best gift of all my long years !!

Please continue to bless me Baba, and protect me and help me in this tough job, where there is going to be initial vehement opposition. Bless me to win over the hearts of all and prove myself in the smooth running of the hospital and keep me secure in your fold.

The time warp in which I am
Makes me remember that day divine,
The first sight of those love-filled eyes
Makes me forget myself even this day.

The question that came then
And which is with me even now,
Do we deserve to be with "Him"?
But then "His" ways are really great.

How "He" pervaded in my being
and read the thoughts as they came,
but was it mere reading of thoughts?
or was "He" the thoughts "Himself".

Every desire "He" knew and fulfilled
Oh! the wonderful Kalpvriksha !
"He" will surely take us to "Sai"
That first day is joyfully dancing with me.

Truth ultimately prevails

Usually we hope that justice wins in our dealing with people. Everyone believes himself to be right, and feels happy if others recognize his merits. If it is not, he feels uneasy and tries to explain atleast to himself that his motives are good even if others don’t see it, or the circumstances urged him to behave this way or other. However even after all our attempts to find excuses, we often doubt – may be not very consciously – that our justification will be successful.

If we have a glimpse of the connection with divinity through holy persons, Gurus or Ishta devatas, we have at least some understanding that our success is not ours and our failure is due to bad samskaras which have to be overcome for our own benefit - the benefit of our Real I.

Only in this way whatever we read or know about Atman or Brahman influences our mind and we become more patient developing saburi and see the hand of divinity even in the sorrows, and this understanding develops in us more and more shraddha.

For us, ordinary people with our hearts full of desire and doubts, this is the only way to feel the perpetual and blazing fire of Truth. For me, since my eyes have just started to open and see a little bit of real things this is a very beautiful way to be in touch with Truth and Sai.

Here I don’t dare to consider the power of direct spiritual experience in seeing the Truth because it is beyond my competence, but each of us can analyze our own life.

In 2007, when I met Satpathyji in Delhi, he gave me advice to start analyzing my thoughts and where they came from etc. The result of this analysis was that I finally start understanding that whatever comes to a person from outside – whether bad or good - simply clings to our inner mental waves.

So from one side, until your mind becomes stronger, it is better to avoid bad things and bad company, but if you still get involved in all these things, that is only because you have attracted them yourself. You alone are responsible for this. For me, this is one of the facets of Great Truth and I thank Sai and Shri Satpathyji for it.

God is to man as magnet is to iron. Why then does He not attract man? As iron deeply imbedded in mud is not moved by the attraction of the magnet so the soul deeply imbedded in Maya (ignorance) feels not the attraction of the Lord. But as when the mud is washed away with water, the iron is free to move, so the soul when by constant tears of prayer and repentance washes away the mud of Maya that makes it cling to the earth, it is soon attracted by the Lord.

In 1996 in New York , I went to visit a museum and had the following experience. Being a Sai devotee, I wore a Baba pendent around my neck and had a small sticker of His picture on the inside of my bag. As I opened my bag to pull out money for the ticket, the lady behind the counter, who was about 25 years old, held my hand and asked me to step aside.

She ushered me into one corner and asked me whose picture was stuck on the flap of my bag. I was a little surprised and told her that He was our Satguru Shri Sainathji. She urged me to tell her about Him and I was happy to do so. After sometime I asked her why was she making these queries? She said that as a child she suffered from cancer and she started getting dreams in which this Old Man would appear and he slowly cured her of the disease.

And after so many years she had seen a picture of the same face! I gave her some photos of Baba and organised a Sai Satcharitra for her. Such is the Glory of Sainath.
