Most of the devotees and disciples of a ‘Sadguru or a Spiritual Master’ generally have a certain fixed beliefs and ideas about the personality and working style of these magnificent beings. They not only conceive of them (the Masters) as Divine human embodiments with perfect qualities but also expect them to function in accordance with certain standards conceptualized by them. The evolved devotees pray and worship them to make them pure, take them out of the worldly engagements and to lead them in the divine path. However, the number of such devotees is very small. On the other hand, the majority of devotees imagine a Guru as one who would forgive them always for their faults, satisfy even their most selfish needs, perform miracles to protect them from all kinds of diseases and problems, save them from the consequences of their immoral and dangerous acts.

With such superficial knowledge gained through reading of a few books and listening to a few discourses, they are conveniently convinced that all the personal problems of the Masters whether physical, financial, social or those relating to his family must be getting solved easily either through God’s intervention or through the use of Master’s miraculous powers. When they come to the Masters with such preconceived assumptions, the very approach is distorted from the beginning. They are not ready to take into consideration the priorities and compulsions of the Masters - mundane and spiritual alike.

No doubt a Sadguru is a Perfect being with far superior qualities of head and heart than any human being and is capable of existing in two states of consciousness simultaneously. By His sheer will, He can enter into the highest states of spiritual ecstasy or can come down to the ordinary worldly realities with equal ease. Thus when in the state of spiritual ecstasy, which can be seen to be either peaceful or otherwise i.e. (Jamali or Jalali state), He can give revelations about future events, persons, places or groups and also can create wonderous miracles like controlling the elements of nature, curing diseases at once and granting fulfillment of desires of the devotees.

On the other hand when He is in an ordinary human state of consciousness, He can be seen to cook food, purchase articles from the market, clean His own clothes, take care of His body, cutting jokes and even engaging in arguments like an ordinary man. To maintain His body as a perfect machine for carrying on His divine role, He has to do certain mundane activities like cleaning His body, eating, sleeping etc. In the case of Masters like Tukaram, Nanakdev, Kabir who had families, they also, besides themselves, had to take care of their family members and relatives. Once with a human body the Masters will have to go through all the limitations and pains of the body they hold.

However devotees who look up to the Master as a God more through their imagination than experience, think that the Guru must be taking care of all his problems through the use of His miraculous powers and are sure that he would be having no problem whatsoever. However, the lives of some of the saints like Tukaram who had a family speaks volumes about the amount of trouble they had to face because even their family members did not understand and appreciate their divine qualities, Many a times their divine benevolence and goodness were interpreted as weakness and exploited by the devotees and relatives alike. Some of the devotees try to surround the Master always and never let Him have any privacy even for prayer.

“After all” the devotees hold “since He is in a God state, we are also His children as much as the one’s born out of Him. Is not spending time with the family members and relatives, when there are so many around wanting to be helped, unbecoming of a real Guru”. The situation is still worse when some people assume themselves to be perfect devotees and demand of the Guru to act in a certain manner towards them as per their desire. They are not aware that even in the spiritual world and hierarchy there are perfect laws and conditions under which such mutual relationship between the Guru and disciple is established.

Most of the so-called and self assumed disciples don’t have any idea about these rules and conditions necessary for moving along the spiritual path with the Masters; far to speak of following them. They seem to be more aware about their rights on the Master than on their duty towards Him. On the one hand they want the Master to fully understand and appreciate their problems, on the other hand they don’t even try to understand and appreciate the priorities and difficulties of the Master.

Even if there is a devotional aspect along with self interest, it is ‘Sakama’ bhakti. The Master rarely gets devotees with ‘Nishkama’ bhakti. But once such a disciple comes into contact with the Master, he is taken care of fully by the Master as His own child. Such a disciple is raised in the spiritual hierarchy by the Master.".........

Q & A

What is the role of a Sadguru like Baba in our life?

The Sadguru gives the ability of God realization to deserving human beings. His first function is to evolve them, stage by stage and give the experience of attaining the state of ‘Paramhamsa’ to the very, very few deserving human beings. Without the grace of a Sadguru it is impossible to achieve this state. One in billions can achieve this ‘Paramhamsa’ or ‘Sadguru’ state. ‘Paramukti’ and ‘turiyavastha’ can be attained with great difficulty.

The Sadguru removes all the impediments in the path of spiritual evolution of any human being who comes in His contact with Him in any way. Sadguru breaks the wrong and illusory concepts (maya) of a devotee collected through a few lives of his existence. All human concepts are relative and illusory in nature. When ignorance is dispelled by the Guru the disciple’s inner knowledge gets illuminated itself.

The true knowledge is veiled by various concepts taught to us from childhood and experience acquired by us. Therefore, it is necessary to shed them before the mind is free to accept new and truthful concepts. For a man who thinks that he is the most intelligent person, the Sadguru wipes out his ego of intellect till he realises that his intellect was full of follies. The Sadguru works upon the human society intensely in a way so as to ensure that human beings transcend their human limitations and attain a limitless state of God, which is their original state.

BABA MAY I ANSWER book by Shri C. B. Satpathy released on Ram Navami For details see www.heritageofshirdisai.org

……"Occasionally some turned up wanting Brahma Jnana from Baba to be handed over to them like a packet of sweets across the counter. One such person was a rich man who went to Baba, and expressly put the question to Baba, ‘What is God like?’ Baba did not address the visitor, but asked some devotee near him to go to Bagchand Marwadi and tell him that Baba wanted Rs.100, and then bring the money. That man returned in a minute and said, ‘The Marwadi (Money lender) says that he has no money, and sends his namaskar’. Baba again sent this man to another money lender to ask him for the loan of Rs. 100.

This time also the devotee returned saying that the money lender said that he had no money. Baba next said, ‘Fetch Nana Saheb Chandorkar’. Nana came. Then Baba told Nana that he wanted Rs.100. Nana at once wrote a chit to the same Bagchand Marwadi for a loan of Rs.I00, and in a minute the money came from that Marwadi, and Nana placed that sum in Baba’s hands. Baba then said, ‘It is all like this in this world.’ The impatient visitor could make out nothing at all and could not understand why, when he asked about God, Baba did not answer the question but went on sending people for loans, and asked Das Ganu why Baba did so. Das Ganu said that Baba had answered his question.

The visitor wanted to know how. Das Ganu said, ‘When others asked for money, it was not forthcoming, but when Nana Saheb asked for it, the money was at once forthcoming. So, the man who merely asks, “What is God like” does not get to know it. But the man who is qualified to know that and only the man who deserves to know that, gets that knowledge. Baba’s answer therefore is “Deserve before you desire Brahman”.

On another occasion, a very rich man came to Baba with a large amount of money in his pocket, and with great anxiety to avoid extra expenditure, as far as possible, he had engaged a cab for the journey from Kopergaon to Shirdi and back, promising to return in half an hour. So, the man came in a hurry to Baba and said, ‘Baba, show me God, Brahman. It is for this I have come all this long way. People say that Shirdi Baba reveals Brahman very quickly.’ Baba said, ‘Do not fear. Immediately and clearly I will show you.

This is not a matter that could be put off. It is hard to get questioners seeking illumination like you. (Here Baba’s irony was hardly understood by the man). Most people seek wealth, cure of disease or trouble, honour, position, or perpetual pleasure and other earthly objects. None wants God. Oh, I long to see those who long to see God. Now, Brahman is the root cause of the Universe that which accounts for Solar and Planetary motions, variations of seasons and division of all functions. One must know, i.e., realise Brahman before death. Else there will be an ever recurring cycle of births and deaths. ReaIisation gives 'Kevala Advaita Sukham '. A Guru gives it and only a Guru can'.

Baba then turned to some others and sent a boy out with these words: “Go, tell Nandalal Marwadi, Baba urgently wants a hand loan of Rs.5/- and bring the money”. The boy went and found the marwadi absent. Baba sent more messages to absent men. The rich man was getting impatient at Baba’s failure to give him atmajnan or sight of God, more especially because delay would mean extra payment to the tonga walla whom he had engaged for the return journey also. He saw, of course, that Baba wanted Rs.5 and he could stop the repeated requests of Baba for Rs.5 by paying it out of the Rs.250/- he had in his pocket. But he was oppressed with the fear that if he advanced the loan, it might prove irrecoverable.

He asked Baba, ‘Will you help me to grasp Brahman?’ Baba replied, ‘You see what I have been doing all this while is to enable you to see God even as you are now seated. Have you understood nothing? I want five. One must surrender the five to get at Brahman. One must surrender the five senses (Indriyas), the five pranas and manas, Buddhi, Ahankar (Mind, Intellect and Ego) (all of which involve Vairagya i.e., detachment). The road to Brahma Jnana is hard to tread. All cannot tread it. When it dawns, there will be light. One who feels unattached to things terrestrial and celestial is alone competent to have Brahmajnan'.

The man found that Baba had read his strong attachment to the Rs.5/- which he considered more important than getting Brahmajnana Upadesa.
Baba taught the absolute importance of complete surrender of Tan Man Dan, that is, body, mind and possessions, as an essential preliminary to fitness to understand and be absorbed in God. This surrender is set out in Srimad Bhagavata and other works.

It was sometime in the first or second week of March this year that I got a call from my father saying that he felt that he passed some blood with his urine, although he had not not feel any related pain earlier. I told him not to worry. He said that he was planning to get medical advice on this. An ultrasound of his right kidney showed growth of some irregular mass on the kidney. Not knowing what it meant, we consulted a doctor over the phone and he suggested immediate CT scan.

We did this and found that there was a growth. The hard part came when the doctor told us that it could not be treated by medicines. The only option left was surgery. This verdict almost shook my father out of his senses. He who had not experienced any major illness in the past and was otherwise healthy found it difficult to undergo an operation and that too within a time frame of 15-20 days at the maximum.

Further enquiries suggested that the operation was either possible in Fortis Hospital or AIIMS by two specific doctors and would include an expense of approximately couple of lakh rupees. Since we had no reference in as big a Govt. Hospital as AIIMS we did not want to consider this as an option. But our dear Baba had planned things in some other way. A few days later an acquaintance of my father came to our house to meet him and upon asking mentioned casually that one of his relatives worked in a senior position in AIIMS.

We asked him whether he could try to get an appointment of the surgeon for us. After a couple of days the appointment was fixed and the surgeon suggested immediate admission to the hospital. My father was admitted to the general ward on the very next day. But this was not the end of Baba’s benevolence. This was just the beginning. Baba saw to it that my father got transferred to a nice private ward on the very next day. He was made to stay there in a very comfortable manner for next 7 days.

All the tests turned out to be in his favour and the operation was done on the 8th day. The operation was successful but what touched us the most was the manner in which things happened. Every thing was so smoothly managed by Baba that the whole stay was not less than a miracle. From admission till discharge, every day gave us a reason to feel that it is Baba himself who is getting things done for us. Not to mention the fact that the expenditure incurred was almost negligible and the doctors called the operation of my father a complication less operation.

Today my father has recovered and often says that everything good that happened during the whole process was Baba’s doing. Our heartfelt thanks to You, Deva. Whatever and howsoever I may say, I know that I would not be able to thank You enough. It was not only his life but our whole family that You saved. Hold our hands always and let our sole refuge be you!!

In the Darkest of Nights

In the darkest of nights, when fear just holds me tight,
And yesterday has only betrayed, then tomorrow I know will only dread.
I feel so much burden in my heart, and sadness has gripped me tight,
Loneliness is all I have right now...

Then as silence just dawns,
I hear an echo in my heart, Om Sai Ram, Om Sai Ram, Om Sai Ram,
My heart beat by beat, says, everything will be ok, just have faith.

It only You that I look to, oh Sai! whatever I am going through,
Its ok, because I know you are with me all the way through,
Om Sai Ram, you show me the truth.

Suddenly I feel like the dark cloud has moved,
And warm sunshine is sprinkling its rays,
Oh Sai! Just the power of Your name Dissolve sorrows and converts them to smiles.

Life without you, oh Sai, is full of sadness, pain, hate, ego and envy,
But You teach love, hope and strength, oh Sai! With two words Faith and Patience,
Though this heartfelt prayer I say, Free us from these chains that kill us day by day.

Oh Sai, teach me Shraddha, and Saburi,
To meditate on your leela's, to rejoice on your life,
The strength to give seva, to my mata pita, guru,
Oh Sadguru, without you, my life is worth no life at all.

In Sri Sai Satcharita many instances have been recorded where SaiBaba has advised how a householder – male as well as female should conduct himself or herself. A few of them are as under:

1. First give bread to the hungry and then eat yourself. Do not make the habit of eating alone. Share it with those around you. Always remember God every time you take food. Before the senses, mind and intellect enjoy their objects, first God should be remembered. He who feeds the hungry, be it human or animal or bird or plant, serves God. See God in all beings. SaiBaba disapproved of fasting and said that God cannot be found on an empty stomach. He advised moderate eating i.e, neither starving nor over-eating.

2. Unless there is some relationship or connection, nobody goes anywhere. If any men or creatures come to you, do not discourteously drive them away but receive them well, and treat them with due respect. Give water to the thirsty, bread to the hungry, clothes to the naked and your verandah to strangers for resting. If anybody wants any money from you and you are not inclined to give, do not give but do not bark at him like a dog. It is on account of Rinanubandh (former relationship) that we have come together, let us love and serve each other and be happy.

3. Duty of feeding sanyasi is of householders due to Panchasoona – five sins and their atonement. In order to prepare food stuffs and meals the householders have to go through five actions or processes viz pounding, grinding, washing pots, sweeping and cleaning and lighting hearths. These processes involve destruction of a lot of small insects and creatures and thus the households incur an amount of sin.

To atone of this these shastras prescribe 6 offerings viz - Offerings to Brahman, study of the Vedas, offerings to ancestors, offerings to Gods, offerings to beings, offerings to men or uninvited guests. If these are duly performed it leads to purification of mind and helps them in getting knowledge and self realization. Baba in going from house to house reminded the householders of their sacred duty.

4. No body should take the labour of others in vain. The worker should be paid his dues promptly and liberally.

5. For spiritual progress of householders, Baba advised that God is One- Ram and Rahim are one and the same, why should their devotees fall out and quarrel among themselves. It is not good to dispute and argue. So don’t argue, don’t emulate others. Always consider your interest and welfare. The lord will protect you. If anyone does any evil unto you do not retaliate. If you can do anything do some good unto others.

6. To reach God, surrender of self to Sadguru is a must. This surrender has to be combined with two virtues of Faith and Patience. We should turn all our attention towards Him and avoid the company of atheists, irreligious and wicked people.

In short, a householder – male or female - should always engage in good actions, do duties of their respective stations in life and surrender themselves, heart and soul to Him. This is enough to achieve the aim of taking a human body.

I want to add some thing to the following incident from Sri Sai Baba's life narrated in your latest edition:

"What has to be endured in ten janmas can be crushed into ten days by the power of Satpurushas. So, Baba ordered him to remain with his legs outstretched at Dwarakamayee and he told him that a crow would come and peck at his wound and cure him. In a few days, Abdul, Baba’s permanent attendant, carelessly put his foot down upon Pillai’s wound and crushed all the guinea worms out of it, merely by accident as, he Pillai, would have thought. But nothing done at the Mosque to Pillai could be considered as an accident, and Baba said that Abdul was the crow, and that no further crow was wanted to peck at Pillai’s wound. Pillai was then asked to go home, and in ten days, the entire suffering from guinea worm was cured."

Actually Dr. Pillai is from Kerala. In Malabar area of Kerala the word used for a crow is Kaka. Also a Muslim is respectfully addressed as Kaka, meaning elder brother. Sri Sai Baba referring to Abdul as Kaka is very meaningful and is extra ordinary as every thing else about Sri Sai Baba.
