……“The ten days are the development of the Primordial energy form of Shakti. On each day its potentiality and functional attributes increase. On the last day it becomes Durga - the highest form of power or the Shakti of Parameswar. Thereafter, creation proceeds at a faster pace after evil forces restricting the evolution are destroyed.

Some body should explain this to devotees on these days so that they understand the significance of the deity and their roles. This can be done on the 8th day that is Ashtami. The Pooja of Gayatri Mata should be done separately in accordance with this principle, as Gayatri is the mother of Bramha, Vishnu, and Maheshwar - all in one.

If Devi mantra is not known then Gayatri Mantra will do and should be recited on the 8th day.

Gayatri Yagnam should be conducted in the temple.

Devotees should avoid negative thoughts and negative actions during the period. They should speak as little as possible and desist from physical contacts. They should do as much charity as possible in terms of feeding the poor, helping the needy and serving the sick.

In the temple, Naam Japa, Bhandara etc are good actions. ".........

Q & A

Like my neighbor, who is a genuine devotee of Baba; I want to do one week parayana of Shri Sai Satcharitra. Kindly tell me how to go about it?

Before doing ‘parayana’ you must understand what the word parayana means. In short parayana means promising to oneself to complete the reading of a religious book or a part thereof or Pooja or recitation of a mantra within a certain period of time. In your case you want to do parayana of Shri Sai Satcharitra.

This means going through the entire book word by word and page by page so as to complete the reading by the seventh day from the day you begin to read it. A parayana is not a quick reading for the sake of reading only or an overview while turning over the pages or reading a few portions as per one’s taste and leaving the other portions.

Parayana is not starting of reading anywhere in the middle of the book and ending anywhere. During the time of Baba, He prescribed completion of the reading of religious scriptures written by Sant Gyaneshwar, Tukaram etc. to devotees. Most of these pothis were read by the devotees on the orders of Baba at a place known as “Dixit Wada” named so, as it was built by Kaka Saheb Dixit.

If possible, reading of the ‘Pothi’ as parayana should begin on a Thursday or on any other special day, such as Ramnavami, Dussehra, Gurupurnima, Janmashtmi, Mahashivratri, Navratri, etc. The Shri Sai Satcharitra book is apportioned in seven parts for the purpose of parayana in seven days time. You will do well to follow the instructions regarding the parayana given in the Shri Sai Satcharitra. On completion of parayana you may like to feed the poor people or make a donation to an institution working for the poor people.

……"Generally people think of tendencies when putting forward that proposition and one can be positive that all tendencies may change by stimuli pro¬ducing opposite tendencies. Sinfulness is a tendency and it can always and should always be met by virtuous actions, virtuous contacts, holy readings and Satsang. As for the rewards, it is often said,

A vascyam Anubhoktavyam
Kritam karma scubha Ascubham.

that is, What one has earned as a reward or punishment for one's act, good or evil must of necessity be endured. This is generally speaking true. But it is not true in the way in which it is baldly put. A person who commits murder is liable to be hanged. But he may also have other forms of punishment either immediately or later on.

The sentences may be altered, reduced, and even completely condoned on such occasions as the King's Birthday pardons. Therefore, it is not correct to say that the reward or punishment earned by conduct is unalterable. Everything on earth is liable to change or mitigate and if we remember this, we shall be able to meet the objections sometimes raised to Sai Baba's statement about karma.

In the very opening Charters of Baba's Charters and Sayings, we find Baba's statement. ‘If one puts his foot on Shirdi soil his karma is abolished’. Many a man wonders whether that is possible especially in view of the dictum quoted above, Avascyam Anubhoktavyam. Baba also told Chandorkar that certain broad decisions arrived at as to the birth and death of people are treated as facts resulting from previous acts of individuals.

Regarding birth of a child, death of a son-¬in-law, about which Chandorkar was anxious to make Baba work on his behalf, Baba declared that they were the result of previous karma and could not be altered. In a sense that is true. Certain births and certain deaths are all fixed by series of antecedent events, but yet Baba is able to mould these and shape these, at certain stages and modify these for the benefit of the concerned devotees.

When talking to Dr. Chidambaram Pillai, Baba explained the correct doctrine. Dr. Pillai had been suffering intensely from guinea worm. He told a friend to go. and report to Baba that his sufferings were intolerable and to request Baba to transfer these sufferings to some ten later births of his and leave him free from the sufferings in this janma. When this was reported to Baba, the latter sent for Pillai and told him, ‘What, you want ten janmas? What has to be endured in ten janmas can be crushed into ten days by the power of Satpurushas'.

So, Baba ordered him to remain with his legs outstretched at Dwarakamayee and he told him that a crow would come and peck at his wound and cure him. In a few minutes, Abdul, Baba's permanent attendant, carelessly put his foot down upon PilIai's wound and crushed all the guinea worms out of it, merely by accident as, he Pillai, would have thought.

But nothing done at the Mosque to Pillai could be considered as an accident, and Baba said that Abdul was the crow, and that no further crow was wanted to peck at Pillai's wound. Pillai was then asked to go home, and in ten days, the entire suffering from guinea worm was cured.

In. another case, that of Bhimaji, who had serious chest diseases such as asthma and tuberculosis, Baba first told Shama, 'In. bringing this thief to me what a load of responsibility you are placing on me. Baba meant that the tuberculosis and asthma from which Bhimaji suffered were the result of Bhimaji's karma in a previous janma consisting of theft. Bhimaji felt Baba's declaration a blow. At once he surrendered himself to Baba and said, Helper of the helpless! I am helpless.

Pray show pity and grace to me. Then Baba's tone changed, Baba told him, The Fakir is merciful, and your disease will be cured. He was suffering from the results of karma, but that could be mitigated, and so the man was sent to live and sleep in a wet verandah. Bhimaji did so. There, he had two very dreadful dreams: In one dream, he was mercilessly birched by a school master. For, in the dream he fancied he was a boy and the master was birching him.

So, he felt the pain in the dream and roared out. In the second dream, it was even 'worse. He felt that some one was placing a stone roller and rolling it over his breast. He suffered all the horror of instant death approaching him. All the pain of a hanging sentence and whipping sentence were endured by this man in the course of one night.

Baba thus changed the punishment which he had earned by his previous karma, and told him that he was thus free from karmic effects. He then recovered his health. The above instances go to show that most of our conceptions about karma are nebulous and ungrounded, and that the safest course for us to follow would be to be guided by the dicta of Satpurushas like Sai Baba.”……

I wish to share an amazing experience of my life. I am sure you would have read that Canberra – Australia’s National Capital – was engulfed in fire on January 18th, 2003. I am from Canberra. The last 24 hours have been a nightmare for us. Australia is known for its bushfires but what we saw in the last 24 hours was unheard of in the history of Australia.

We live in a part of Canberra that has plenty of bush and scenery. My house is about 3 minutes drive from my work and there are mountains behind my work place. For the last 4 days the area behind the mountains was burning and as it was a reserve we did not think much of it. We went to work and came home without knowing that we were soon going to be doomed.

Yesterday afternoon at 2:00 our whole family went to the shop just behind our house. In the shop we heard a sales girl come up and tell her friends that her place was on fire. Her place was in the suburb next to ours! We rushed out of the mall only to find a darkened sky with a red globe and ash and embers every where. We rushed home and were in a state of panic as were all the people on the road. My kids started crying helplessly, sensing the danger.

My husband and I wanted to salvage important things like papers, passports, citizenship certificates and other stuff and a few clothes. We had the radio on full volume and were told that the whole of Canberra had been declared as being under state of emergency until further notice. We were upset and were deciding to hose down the fence and roof of the house.

Our neighbors told us to evacuate as the fire was sure to reach us as the mountains and the suburb next to ours were ablaze and the wind was traveling at the speed of 100 KM/hour. We were lost and could not make up our minds. Then I told my kids to grab their important stuff and fill the bath tub with water and put damp towels at the doors to keep them occupied and I asked my husband to give me half an hour. I locked myself in a room and read Vishnu Sahasranamam.

Then in my usual fashion when I am in state of confusion I seek answers from Sai Satcharitra. I begged and implored BABA to guide us and tell us whether to leave the house and go away or stay at home. I closed my eyes, thought of my BABA and opened the book and BABA the merciful answered me with this - I beg you read carefully the highlighted words. "Balasaheb Mirikar, son of
Sardar Kakasaheb Mirikar Was Mamlatdar of Kopergaon. He was going on tour to Chitali. On the way he came to Shirdi to see Sai Baba.

When he went to the Masjid and prostrated himself before Baba, usual conversation regarding health and other matters commenced, when Baba sounded a note of warning as follows:-"Do you know our Dwarakamayi?" As Balasaheb did not understand he kept quiet, Baba continued - "This is our Dwarakamayi, where you are sitting. She wards off all dangers and anxieties of the children, who sit on her lap. This Masjidmayi (its presiding Deity) is very merciful; she is the mother of the simple devotees, whom she will save in calamities. Once a person sits on her lap, all his troubles are over.

He, who rests in her shade, gets Bliss". Then Baba gave him Udi, and placed HIS protecting hand on his head. When Balasaheb was about to depart, He again said- "Do you know the "Lamba Baba" (long gentleman), viz. serpent?" And then closing the left arm like fist He brought it near the right elbow, and moving His left arm like the hood of a serpent, He said- "He is so terrible, but what can he do to the children of Dwarakamayi: When the Dwarakamayi (its presiding deity) protects, what can the serpant do?” (Chapter 22 - Sai Satcharita).

From this I understood that our house was Dwarakamayi – as we worship BABA in our house and HE is our MASTER. I cried holding this book to my heart. I showed it to my husband my 9 and half year old and my 5 year old son. We were very emotional. We then decided to leave the bags in the car and we started hosing down the house and decided we shall stay in the house - if we were to evacuate then the emergency department would come and tell us.

We were outside watering and preparing for the worst. We heard that winds would worsen from afternoon 6:30 and it would be blowing towards our direction carrying balls of fire and that situation was grave. We were constantly looking out 6:30 came and went. Earlier we could not see anything more than 10 meters away as it was covered with thick smoke. But instead of getting worse the smoke cleared and by 8:30 there was cool soft breeze.

Our suburb which was on red alert was not even mentioned as being at risk though we were surrounded by suburbs which were on alert. Houses were gutted and were engulfed in fire when a ball of fire swept over unexpectedly and 400 and more people lost their houses in the western part. There was no power in most of the places. Canberra was in a blackout. Except for few of our houses in the suburb where we lived; the rest of the houses in most affected parts of Canberra were in blackout.

At night we saw the mountains behind my office burn. My friends, who were presumably in a safe area and had invited us to stay with them as we were at high risk, had to evacuate themselves as the flames spread towards their houses. They had no power for 12 hours or more. WE WERE SAFE. We had electricity. The things we always took for granted - we realized the essence of it. We had water and we were all together. All because I followed what BABA told me through the book, and HE assured that HE would save us.

Had we left in panic then we would have been engulfed in fire on the road. By staying at home we were safe. When we saw the pathetic situation of people who had lost their memories and valuable things, which cannot be replaced like pictures, medals and other trinkets, I counted my blessings.

Money is not important but there are some things which are more valuable for us. Some lost their lives, and many houses were gutted. We are fortunate as we did not suffer anything other than mild inconvenience from inhalation of smoke. My husband's office was burnt down. His boss called on Sunday morning asking him not to bother going to work till Wednesday. Businesses shut down.

There was utter chaos, grief and shock. This brought out love, concern, empathy and the best in people as they came to the rescue of others in need. Believe me we are still in shock, especially the little kids. My 9 year old asked me – “Mum BABA hit his stick and brought the fire down, can't he do that now? I said HE would if we pray. Both my kids sat and prayed.

My 9 year old is a voracious reader and loves to read AMAR CHITRA KATHA's about God's mythology and stories. He read a book on Shirdi Sai BABA. I was amazed at his thoughtfulness. We are richer now, richer with new experiences, richer in our faith getting stronger towards the holy feet of BABA. Most important my children learnt that BABA never lies once HE promises. The't what we went through and learnt through it.

I am grateful for being given this chance to survive and learn from this experience. I am grateful to God for teaching me the value of the air that we breathe, for the electricity without which the food which I bought in preparation of my little one's birthday party would have gone bad in the freezer. We became richer in compassion and empathy, showing concern for our other friends momentarily forgetting our needs. This is a learning opportunity provided to us by BABA. He did this only:

1. To show HIS presence in our lives and that HE alone is our caretaker.
2. To show our gratitude towards what HE provided to us.
3. To emphasize that we should not take things for granted and to let us count His blessings in the little things that make our life comfortable.
4. To let us show compassion, love and concern. Tomorrow we might need it and what we pass around comes back to us.
5. To make us open our window of understanding and love.
6. To thank God for the small mercies and to tell that there are others who are in graver situation than ours.
7. To tell us to have contentment with what we have and not to compare ourselves with others and make ourselves miserable.

As Baba is there within all of us, let us reach out to Him and feel Him in our hearts. He alone is our savior. Please, while doing naama japa can I beg you all to pray for those victims of the fire who lost their homes and loved ones, for all those brave firemen, and persons from military and other emergency services who worked nonstop to control the fire.

We are doing fine now by BABA's grace, in spite of the threat still looming over our heads, and even though we still have smoke and haze around us. BABA gives us such experiences only to increase our faith. Let us collectively bow down to BABA for His constant vigilance and guidance in our lives. For us there is no other adviser than Him and we seek His blessings. BABA protect us always.

The Lotus flower of my heart,
At your feet I offer you Sai.

The depth of it only you can see,
For you are love my dear dear Sai.

Your love has opened my rough outer,
And revealed the silent beauty pure.

The joy this gives is so profound,
The love unexpressed is finally found.

Your eyes of love take me still deeper,
To touch the ground of infinite bliss.

Giving me everything I always longed for,
Your grace is unending my dear Sai Baba.

Your delicate love has healed my sense,
Revealing to me the wholeness of being.

The precious gift that you have showered on me,
Is un-understandable by the normal human mind.

All I can say to you dear Sai,
Thank you I love you my very own Sai.

The flower of this heart is eternally yours,
Mould it as you wish for I am yours dear Sai.

Human relationship

The power of inspiration is mighty. For more than a century a brief quotation has been making the rounds, repeated over and over again in print, and widely spread by word of mouth. No one knows who originally wrote or said it, though it has been variously attributed to many great writers.

No one knows when it was said, or how it came to take such firm hold of the world's heart and mind. But take hold it did, impelling untold numbers of people to be kinder and more considerate to their fellow beings. It remains as fresh and vital as ever, a familiar little gem of inspiration:

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now."

It is a reminder to all of us that we do not live for ourselves alone, that we must do what we can to help others, to lighten a burden or soften grief, whenever the need arises. The following story is a classic example on helping others:

"Once a kind-hearted man, wise but poor, lived in a tiny hut. One rainy night he had just returned from a hard day's work and was warming himself near the fire on which he had cooked his humble supper. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. A man had lost his way. Could he have shelter? "Come in," the wise man said. "My place is big enough for two."

Then came a second knock. Another stranger had lost his way. Again the wise man said, "Come in," thinking to himself that the two strangers could share his cot and he would sleep on the floor.

A third knock sounded, and he welcomed another refugee from the storm. "Come in. We will squeeze together. We will be warmer that way."

There was a fourth knock. "Come in. We can all stand comfortably in the hut."

A fifth person was welcomed and the hut was crowded indeed. But the wise man was undisturbed. "Let us sing hymns and thank God for our shelter."

But when the sixth knock came, he opened the door to welcome yet another person, ready to make a place by going out himself.

Then all at once the room became larger, aglow with Divine light. The sixth caller was the Lord Himself."

Where there is love, there is always room. Indeed love cannot be constrained by walls.

He who does good to another does good also to himself, not only in the consequence but in the very act. For the consciousness of well-doing is in itself ample reward. In the hustle and bustle of life today, when so few of us take time out to think of others, its good to remember the generous and wise man.

Let Sadguru Sainath Give Us Strength To Do Good Always.

C. Saibaba, Orissa

I was pulled by Sadguru Sainath Maharaj into Saipath few months ago. I am working as Chief Booking Supervisor in Indian Railways at Puri Station. My job is based on a shift system. I am staying at Khurda Road, which is 50 Kilometres away from Puri and after completion of duties I shuttle back home daily.

With His Grace I could complete a few Parayanas of Sai Satcharitra by Hemadpant, Telugu Version. I am now told that Parayana should be done at a particular fixed time daily and not varied times. Since my duties are of shift nature, fixing time for Parayana would be a difficult task. I am somewhat devastated after hearing this.

So far whenever, I find an opportunity, I sit before the Photograph of Sainath Maharaj and doing parayana, be it at home, be it in train and be it in temple.

Kindly guide me and show me the way.

Adi, USA

My many, many millions of thanks to our dear Sainath Maharaj, as today I feel that my faith and trust paid off with your miracle and blessings. It was today that after almost a year my wife called and has given me a chance to work out our differences.

Baba knows how much I have been wanting to be with her and I know this is a fresh start and once again I ask Baba's blessings to save our marriage. I love you very much Baba, everybody please believe in Him and trust Him wholeheartedly as He is so generous to His devotees and all living beings. Thank you again Baba.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Heritage of Shirdi Sai team , for putting together this experience of getting in touch with our Sadguru, Shri Sai and the perfect masters through the newsletter Sai E-zine, website www.heritageofshirdisai.org and the Heritage of Shirdi Sai magazine.

Like it is said in the Sai Satcharitra, that it is only the Guru, who can take us on the path of almighty ... to become one in union, similarly it is only Sathpathyji, who could have put together this great work of upgrading the devotees to another level. Thank you.

Seema Poddar, Kolkotta

Jai Sai Ram! I am just so so shocked after reading a devotee's experience in your Magazine. That devotee's name is "Vandana Ritik" from New Delhi. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your experience with us. I am still so so moved.

I read Shri Satpathyji's Guru Purnima Message with the utmost of devotion and really it was something that I totally identified with particularly with regard to psychological dependence on Baba; wish to establish intense relationship with him and periodical emotional vacuum when one feels as if Baba is no more "in Touch" with us my reaction to it initially was I used to get upset about it. Gradually I begin to accept it and felt calmer.

I realised that Baba is always there when I need him and he has innumerable devotees to look after. This intensified my Faith in Him and 'Saburi' too. True, as Shri Satpathyji says, one is always looking to collect photographs and trinkets of Baba Sai Nath. Many times I have felt Baba's subtle Presence and His Kind Grace in many emotional difficulties.

What more can I say about the Master of Universe? I am speechless. I always look forward to read Shri Satpathyji's article on Baba as I feel very connected to Baba Sai through them. Thank you.

The Centre will be devoted to celebrating the life & teachings of Shirdi Sai Baba only. For more information visit our website http://www.saisansthan.com/
