FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE

……“Hazrat Baba Tajuddin was one of the five perfect Masters (Sadgurus) of his age. Whereas Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi headed this group of five masters as Param SadGuru, the other masters were Baba-Jaan of Poona, Upasani Maharaj of Sakori (near Shirdi in Maharashtra) and Shri Narayan Maharaj of Keda Gaon (Maharashtra). Such is the play of nature known as maya (illusion) that this perfect master was declared a lunatic and kept in confinement in the Nagpur Lunatic Asylum for more than sixteen years. However, Baba Tajuddin started his divine play from this place and virtually converted the asylum to a place of worship.

Baba Tajuddin was born on the 21st of January in the year 1861 at a place called Kamthi situated near Nagpur in the State of Maharastra. From the birth itself, there was something unusual about the child, for the new-born baby would not at all cry. He would, at times, open his eyes and look at people and again go to sleep. All normal methods to induce the child to cry having failed, the parents took recourse to a traditional shock method of touching a hot iron to the forehead and ear of the child. With the application of this method the child jerked out of its stupor and started crying. The burn marks thus made on the head and ears of the child remained on his body till the last.

More often than not, it is seen that highly developed souls become orphans in their early childhood so that they become free to operate in their spiritual world. This had happened with Shri Shirdi Sai and this also happened with Baba Tajuddin. His father expired when he was only one year old and his mother expired when he was only nine years old.

The care of this orphan was taken over by his maternal grandmother and maternal uncle Abdul Rahman. As a child, Baba started his education at the age of six in a local madrasa in Kamthi. During this time a spiritually-developed soul, known as Hazrat Abdulla Shah, visited the madrasa and saw the child Tajuddin. He immediately told the teacher - “Why are you teaching this child. He has got all knowledge from his past life.” Saying thus, he took out a dry fruit (Khumani) from his bag, ate half, and put the other half in the mouth of the child saying “Eat less, sleep less and speak less. Read Quoran.” ".........

Q & A

How can a human being make rapid progress in the direction of spiritual evolution?

Nobody can progress in the spiritual path by merely reading or listening to others or planning his spiritual development as a time-bound management concept. Any such knowledge, which is not put into practice, shall not be of much use. It is not easy to practice the code of conduct required in the spiritual path e.g. to be egoless and to sacrifice for others etc. For doing this, faith in the Master and God and will power are absolutely necessary. It becomes possible and easier for the devotee to tread this path by surrender at the feet of a Sadguru or a Master. A worldly man should not try to become a Yogi, a Siddha, or to awaken one’s Kundalini or to become a liberated soul etc. It would be a foolish act to use these phrases for oneself without understanding their meaning. It is important to have unshakable faith in God and pray Baba continuously to lead us in the path as ordained by the laws of nature. We must also understand this fact that we are not the doers. It is necessary to do away with the sense of doership. This sense of being a doer emerges from our ego and does not leave us easily. Once we follow the path shown by the Sadguru or the Master with devotion and patience then if the Sadguru wants He may give us siddhi or mukti or whatever He desires but we should not strive for the same through our limited and sometimes distorted perceptions.

BABA MAY I ANSWER book by Shri C. B. Satpathy released on Ram Navami For details see www.heritageofshirdisai.org

FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI

……"As for Baba's declaration about his Guru, Prof. Narke heard Baba say, Maja Guru Brahman Ahe, that is, My Guru is a Brahmin. Having said so much about his Guru, Prof Narke carefully noted that Baba did not say that he had any sishya to continue his line.

On the other hand, Sai Baba said, ‘I would tremble to come into the presence of my Guru'. There was no one prepared to serve Sai Baba in that way at Shirdi. Once Sai Baba asked, it seems, 'Who dares to call himself my disciple? Who can serve me adequately and 'satisfactorily?' But apart from such a disciple to continue the line, Baba helped in various ways and in various degrees.

He encouraged them, protected them and gave them instructions occasionally. Narke was studying Baba's methods of teaching and improving devotees. Baba gave out moral tales and a few occasional directions. But these were exceptional. But the traditional method of Baba was not oral. His traditional method was first the negative portion, that is, the Guru did not give to his chosen disciple any Guru mantra.

Usually a Guru whispers a mantra into the ear of the. sishya, and he seems to be almost biting the ear when he is whispering. So, Baba said, 'Me Kanala Dasnara Guru Navlze'. That is. I am not the Guru that bites the ear. He did not regard japa and meditation as sufficient for the sishya.

These produce in the sadhaka Abhimana or Ahamkara. Unless and until Ahamkara is completely wiped out the Guru is unable to pour all his influence into the sishya. In Baba's school, the Guru does not teach. He radiates or pours influence. That influence is poured in and absorbed in full by the soul which has completely surrendered itself and blotted out the self, but is obstructed by the exercise of intelligence by reliance on self-exertion and by every species of self-consciousness and self-assertion.

Baba, therefore, would tell some devotees, 'Be by me and keep quiet and I wiII do the rest', that is, 'secretly or invisibly'. Of course faith in him - absolute faith - is a pre-requisite. One who was merely seeing him and staying by him for a while got faith. Baba gave experiences to each devotee, of his vast powers of looking into his heart, into the distant regions of space and time, past or future and these infused faith.

One need not swallow a thing on trust. The solid benefit, temporal or spiritual reaped by the devotee and his feeling that he is under the eye and power of Baba always, wherever he may be and whatever he may do, gave him an ineradicable basis for his 'further temporal and spiritual guidance. Baba's is the power that controls this world's goods and our fate here and now, as well as our experience and fate in the future, in this world and many unseen worlds.

The professor concludes that the duty of a devotee under Baba is only to keep himself fit for the Guru's grace. That is, he should be chaste, pure, simple and virtuous and he should look trustfully and sincerely to the beloved master to operate on him secretly, and to raise him to various experiences, higher and higher in range, till he is taken at last to the distant goal. 'But one step is enough for me,' is the proper attitude now.

He need not take the trouble to decide complicated metaphysical and philosophical problems about the ultimate destiny. He is ill-prepared to solve them now. The Guru will lift him and endow him with higher powers, vaster knowledge and increasing realisation of truth. And the end is safe in the Guru's hands.

These above conclusions, as the professor says, are not from any single lecture or address by Baba, but are gathered from the various hints, his dealings with many people and his occasional words.”……

DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE

My beloved mother was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus in 1994. In November, 1998 her condition worsened. The local doctors at Visakhapatnam (A.P.) who were treating my mother asked us to take her to Vellore for further treatment because her condition was worsening day by day. My father and uncle took her to Vellore where the doctors told us that her chances of survival were low because the cancer was at an advanced stage and she was unable to eat or drink anything. She was not having bowel movement.

The last option left for the doctors was surgery. Doctors told my father that ever after surgery, her chances of survival were very low. Since we had no option left except to get the surgery done, my father signed all the documents needed for surgery. At that time, I was living in Chicago, USA. My father asked me to come home immediately as her condition was worsening day by day.

That day I called my fiancée (now she is my wife, a staunch devotee of Baba), and told her about my mother's condition. My fiancée was in India at that time. She assured me that nothing will happen; she will pray to Baba for my mother’s life and asked me also to pray Baba. For the first time, I prayed Baba with tears in my eyes to save my mother. Baba immediately answered my prayer. A miracle happened and my mother who was in Operation Theater for surgery had her bowel movement.

The doctors were surprised; they came out and told my father that no surgery was needed because she had bowel movement and asked him to take her back to Visakhapatam and continue the treatment there. Baba gave my mother enough strength to perform our wedding within a month of this incident. With Baba's blessing and her blessing we got married as per the scheduled date. With Baba's blessing, she survived for another 15 months and breathed her last in January 23rd 2000.

The local doctor at Visakhapatnam who used to treat my mother is also a devotee of Baba who knows my mother's condition. He gave her Baba's Satcharitra to read while she was in hospital. She always kept it under her pillow in the hospital till her last moment.

Baba loves His devotees and take care at every step of their life. His love for His devotees is infinite. I don't want to say Baba Thank You, for saving my mother and giving her 15 months more of life and taking care at every step of our life because Thank You is a very small word. I just put my head at His feet and ask Him bless me and my family and stay with us always.

POEM

Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my soul, rendering movement to this mortal coil,
You are in the throbbing of my heart, making it beat all the while,
You are in my nerves making them pulsate all the time,
You are in my respiration, deluging this body with life,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my mind, inspiring for a good deed,
You are in my heart, singing His name indeed,
You are in my eyes, giving light to the blind,
You are in my memories, reminding me of You Divine,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my thoughts, inciting to think of You Divine,
You are in my life, pouring happiness and delight,
You are in my fancies, making me what not in day bright,
You are in my dreams, blessing with jewels of light,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my cravings, urging me to wish for You & Sai,
You are in my sight, giving a look different from mine,
You are in my deeds, making me a bit selfless at times,
You are in my words, getting me speak truth for a while,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my impetus, driving me to do somewhat nice,
You are in my character, impelling me not to commit a vice,
You are in my wisdom, to judge what is wrong or right,
You are in my feelings, making me blissful on Your sight,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

You are in my tears, reminding to weep only for You,
You are in my laughter, soothing my heart and mind,
You are in my faith, enabling me trust You & Sai,
You are in my patience, hoping for Your grace to find,
Gurudev! Where are You not! Where are You not!

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Truth Ultimately Prevails

Thinking with love is truth. "Truth: Nothing is absolutely true, really real. The waking experience is as unreal as the dream experience. When you are in deep sleep, there is no world at all. When you attain the supra-conscious fourth stage, the "I" alone remains the universal "I" which was mistaken even in the sleeping stage as limited. Truth is more fundamental than the atom. Every atom and every star manifests the truth to those who have the eyes of wisdom. Man's supremacy lies in his capacity to become aware of this truth.

The chief duty of man is investigation into truth. Truth can be won only through dedication and devotion, and they are dependent on the grace of God, which is showered on hearts saturated with love.

Speak the truth, but speak pleasantly. Simply because a statement will be welcome to the hearer, don't speak it out to win his approval; if speaking truth will cause grief or pain, keep silent. That is the vow of truth in ordinary daily life. Don't have hypocrisy or crookedness in your speech. Both unpleasant truth and pleasant untruth have to be avoided.

Have faith that truth will save you in the long run. Stick to it regardless of what might befall.

There is in everyone a spark of truth; no one can live without that spark. There is in everyone a flame of love; life becomes a dark void without it. That spark, that flame is God, for he is the source of all truth and all love. Man seeks truth. He seeks to know the reality because his very nature is derived from God, who is truth. He seeks love, to give it and share it, for his nature is of God and God is love.

The experience of truth alone can foster love, for truth is so all-embracing and integrating that it sees no distinction. Truth is the current and love is the bulb it has to illumine. Through truth, you can experience love; through love, you can visualize truth.

As Sri N.Kasturi said in his book, (author of "Satyam, Sivam, Sundaram" books) "Each of us has to live the volume of biography, which we bring with us, as often as we are born, page after page, chapter after chapter, howsoever punctuated with dots and dashes, interrogations and exclamations, comas and colons, until the sentence ends ultimately with a full stop." But luckily, we have, as our Master and Guide, Counsel, Bhagwan Baba Himself, so let us try to live upto His expectations.

Baba is everywhere; just feel Him and keep on saying `Om Sai Ram' to whomsoever you meet.

Om Sai Sri Sai Jai Jai Sai!!! Let us pray at the lotus feet of Sai Baba who is the incarnation of all Gods and protector of all, to show mercy on us, and increase our devotion towards Him.

DEVOTEES' FORUM

God is to man as magnet is to iron. Why then does He not attract man? As iron deeply imbedded in mud is not moved by the attraction of the magnet so the soul deeply imbedded in Maya (ignorance) feels not the attraction of the Lord. But as when the mud is washed away with water, the iron is free to move, so the soul when by constant tears of prayer and repentance washes away the mud of Maya that makes it cling to the earth, it is soon attracted by the Lord.

Chandra Prakash Kumar

In 1996 in New York , I went to visit a museum and had the following experience. Being a Sai devotee, I wore a Baba pendent around my neck and had a small sticker of His picture on the inside of my bag. As I opened my bag to pull out money for the ticket, the lady behind the counter, who was about 25 years old, held my hand and asked me to step aside.

She ushered me into one corner and asked me whose picture was stuck on the flap of my bag. I was a little surprised and told her that He was our Satguru Shri Sainathji. She urged me to tell her about Him and I was happy to do so. After sometime I asked her why was she making these queries?

She said that as a child she suffered from cancer and she started getting dreams in which this Old Man would appear and he slowly cured her of the disease. And after so many years she had seen a picture of the same face! I gave her some photos of Baba and organised a Sai Satcharitra for her. Such is the Glory of Sainath.
