VOL87, JULY 2009

……“The celebrities who lived on the banks of the rivers, the Godavari and the Narmada in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century are Sri Akkalkot Maharaj (Maharashtra), Sri Tajuddin Baba (Nagpur), Sri Gajanan Avadhut (Shegaon, Maharastra), Sri Baba Jan and Sri Sankar Maharaj (Pune), Sri Meher Baba (Ahmed Nagar), Sri Upasani Maharaj (Sakuri, Maharastra), Sri Narayan Maharaj (Kedgaon, Maharastra) and above all Sri Shirdi Sai Baba (Shirdi, Maharastra).

Sri Shirdi Sai Baba, flourished in the later half of the 19th century and would remain as a manifested Param-Sadguru for the coming seven centuries. The Sadgurus, transcending all the confines of caste, sect and colour, remain engaged in the spiritual up-lift of the humanity and operate in both physical and metaphysical plane. Even animals, birds and other living creatures are treated compassionately by them. The life-style of Sai Baba, His routine functioning etc. reflected His abundant compassion for the redemption of the people. His place of abode was accessible to all and sundry. While in Shirdi He lived in Dwarakamayee, a dilapidated mosque and was venerated both by the Hindus and the Muslims as per their respective customs.

During His life time both the Hindus and Muslims used to celebrate various festivals jointly. The tombs of His close initiates like Abdul Baba and Tatiyakote Patil are found in the same place at Shirdi. The consecrated flame which was lit by the Holy Sai Nath at Shirdi, still continues till date. Fire worship is one of the important sacraments of the Zorastrians. It is surprising that a large number of Parsees in India happen to be followers of Shirdi Sai Baba. The Holy Sai Nath, though dressed like a muslim, had His earlobes perforated, according to the system which is in vogue in the Natha tradition. It is needless to reiterate that the country has been favoured with Matsyendra Nath, Gorakh Nath etc. the ‘Param-Yogins’ of the Natha tradition.

Ashes collected from the sacred flame lit by the Baba have been efficacious in relieving people from various diseases and mundane afflictions. Baba always liked the company of His followers and shunned luxurious living. He used to lie on a torn jute-rag and rest His head on a brick. Among His personal belongings, were a chillam, a Satka (stick) and His torn kafni. He used to mend His own cloth. It was, observed that at times He used to throw into the Dhuni, a piece of new cloth after His maiden-use.

He also used to give away food-stuff to the poor offered to Him in a silver platter by the rich devotees. Thousands of rupees given to Him every day as Dakshina were distributed among the poor by Him on the same day. Every day He would have earnings of a king and by night He would again be a pauper. The day He left His mortal body he had only nine coins at His disposal, which He gifted away to one of His devotees as a token of blessing. This is verily in keeping with the scriptural description of Lord Shiva.

Today when India and the whole world is almost is almost torn asunder with religious conflicts, communal strife, economic clashes, the stream of compassion of the great humanist Sri Sainath is flowing unabatedly. Today Shirdi is being visited by around 25 thousand people everyday for paying their homage to the Shrine of Baba and the number of devotees is increasing everyday. The semi-government organization, Sai-Sansthan of Shirdi is struggling to take care of the ever-increasing number of pilgrims.

Many temples are being constructed both in India and abroad dedicated to Shirdi Sai. Reports about the construction of a temple in honour of Sai Nath have been reaching every week. In Andhra Pradesh alone there exist as many as 250 Sai temples. Thousands of people have been inspired to build temples on their own and have been preaching the Sai philosophy here and abroad. The growing multitude of the Sai devotees signals the fact that the historic Sai movement would be established in the coming century, ‘Peace and amity’ in India and abroad. Shri Sai is the incarnation of the age and therefore faith in Him is found to spread with far reaching consequences in future.".........

Q & A

Please teach me how to do the prayers of Shirdi Sai Baba. What is the best method of praying?

Place Baba’s statue or photograph in front of you. Begin by concentrating on His photograph or painting from feet to head and vice-versa as Baba has himself prescribed in chapter 22 of Shri Sai Satcharitra. Either sing the Aarti of Baba or recite any Mantra you know or pray through a familiar language. This is so because one must clearly understand the meaning of the Aarti or Bhajans that he is singing in the name of the Master. What is necessary is a feeling of love towards Him. Silent and concentrated prayer is the best. One can pray at any time and at any place silently. Mental prayer with concentration is better, in case the devotee has developed that capacity. Otherwise, pray aloud individually or in congregations as is generally practiced at home or in the temples.

BABA MAY I ANSWER book by Shri C. B. Satpathy released on Ram Navami For details see www.heritageofshirdisai.org

……"His first impression of Baba was fairly good. He had his own ways of viewing spiritual matters and he was a good student of sacred literature especially in Marathi. He was studying Eknath’s and Jnaneswar’s books, making fairly good progress in spirituality, as ordinarily understood. But there was something very peculiar in his case. Jnaneswari is used as pothi, a daily parayana book by most people and they succeeded in effecting one complete parayanam within a specified period, the reading going on from day to day.

In Sri B.V.Dev’s case, however, on the first occasion, on the second and also on the third, whenever he began the parayana of Jnaneswari, obstacles of various sortss sprang up, and he could not finish the reading in a continuous fashion. He was very puzzled and also disgusted. There must be some unseen reason behind the obstacle. What it could be, he could not guess. This was one of the things which brought him nearer to Baba. When he went to Shirdi with Jnaneswari, he was anxious to get Baba’s aid for overcoming the unseen obstacle. He gave Baba the Jnaneswari with one rupee so that the book might be returned to him for study.

Baba: Why one rupee? Bring Rs.20

Dev brought and gave Rs. 20, but still Baba said nothing about Pothi. That night Dev was trying to talk to Balakram Manker, who had derived much spiritual benefit from Baba and asked him to narrate his experiences with Baba, showing how he got into His grace. Balakram Manker put off the narration till the next evening. Next day Baba asked Dev, ‘Give me Rs.20’, Dev paid it and went back and was talking to Balakram. Balakram was just beginning his narration. Just then Baba sent for Dev. and Dev went.

Baba: What were you talking? With whom and where?

B.V.Dev: At Dixit wada I was talking with Balakram about your greatness and fame.

Baba: Fetch Rs. 25

Dev fetched and paid Rs. 25 to Baba.

Baba: Sit here in the mosque.

Baba then suddenly grew angry and said, ‘Why are you stealing my rag? Is it your way to steal and that despite your grey hairs? I will kill you with a hatchet’. Baba’s asking for dakshinas and his sudden anger might ordinarily be supposed to act as shocks to his mind, but in whatever way they were intended to operate, Baba did not make it clear at once.

Dev was benefited and did not know what the rag was and what the anger would lead to. After ten minutes of such fiery anger, Dev was sent back. Half an hour later, Baba sent for Dev and all the others to come to the Masjid. Then Baba addressing Dev, said, 'Tambye Bhav, have I wounded you by talking of the rag? If there is theft, it has to be mentioned. There is no other go. Be it so. God will look to everything'. Then he asked Dev for Rs. 12 dakshina which Dev procured and paid.

Baba to Dev: What are you doing'?

Dev: Nothing.

Baba: Go on reading Pothi daily in the morning at the wada. When I wished to give you a nice lace shawl in its entirety, why do you go and steal a tatter?

Dev then began reading lnaneswari as Pothi and thereafter there were no more obstacles. This was a sure proof to him of Baba's controlling powers and there was no necessity for him thereafter to enquire about the experience of others. Dev realised that such personal experiences formed a full lace shawl given by Baba and picking up secondhand information from others of their experiences of Baba amounted to stealing rags of Baba.

Though Dev succeeded in reading Jnaneswari without obstacle, he had made no progress in understanding its meaning. Baba then appeared in his dream and asked, ‘Do you understand the meaning of what you read?’

Dev with tears: ‘No. How can I understand unless you grant it by your grace?’

Baba: ‘You are reading too hastily. Sit by my side and read.’

Dev: ‘What shall I read?’

Baba: ‘Adhyatma’

Dev went in and brought Adhyatma Ramayana. Then the dream ended and Dev woke up.

When Dev found that his completion of Jnaneswari was evidently a chamatkar of Baba, by which he overcame the unseen obstacles to the completion of his parayanam of Jnaneswari, he understood that this chamatkar of Baba was a full lace shawl while the stories about Baba’s lilas which he would glean from Manker would be second-hand stories of other people’s experiences.

Baba occasionally gave him hints for his spiritual progress. But it was not always that Dev could understand them correctly. Baba asked Dev once, ‘Bhav, give me dakshina’. B. V. Dev gave one guinea.

Baba: ‘Give more’

Baba, after getting four guiness said, ‘Though four were given by you, Baba has got only one’.

Dev: ‘Baba I have given four’.

Baba: 'Yes, but I have only one. You will know’.

The obvious interpretation is, though the devotee surrenders his fourfold Antahkarana Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara and Chitta, Baba receives only the Jiva and all multiplicity when it reached God-Baba, becomes one. So the mind must surrender multiplicity unto the Guru God to attain unity.”……

I was working in a company for 13 years and was doing well. The person to whom I was reporting was the head of the department. There was management change and the person to whom I reported, person changed. Since I was very old employee in the company, all the employees and company head and V.P.'s called me for work. I would do the work without looking at the clock. If I received a call while I was at home then I would work even though it was after office hours.

This created an ego problem for my head of department. He wanted to take away my responsibilities from me. He brought his own people into department and gave various responsibilities to them. He did not give much responsibility to me. Although he was torturing me and I was very disappointed with his behaviour, I kept quiet even despite his rude and harsh behaviour towards me.

As days were going by his behaviour worsened and one day I made up my mind to find another alternate way. So I prayed to Sai Baba. Whatever I face, good or bad, I tell Baba. So I told Baba to give me peace, and I wanted to get a new job with better position. One Thursday night I received a call from a company asking me to come for the interview the next day.

I was selected for the next round and they were happy and they asked to come on Monday for a video conference with the head of department who is at Bombay. However this got postponed to Thursday. I was selected and was very happy that my prayers were answered by Sai Baba.

After I joined the new company, the person who called me for the interview told that he searching for the candidate for that particular position for a long time and on that day when he was about to call me, he was praying to Sai Baba and he was going through my profile and then he called me for interview. Now I am happy with my job. I got better position and salary. And I am grateful to Sai Baba for blessing me with a new job in a good company. Thank you Sai Baba.

Offerings at the feet of Guru

O Master, your world is filled with chaos
Filled with hurt, deceit and selfishness
Hearts are trampled crushed and beaten
Near and dear ones leave our side
Surround us with lies, accusations, hatred
My heart is heavy and depressed by the ways of the world.
In this saddened state I felt you holding my hand.
I felt the fragrance of your love.
You said ‘My child I am there for you, now and ever’.
I despaired in vain for you are always with me.
that is enough to tide the worldly ocean.

O Master, I beg you to listen to this cry of desperate heart,
When I am provoked, remind me to talk sweetly
When criticized, accused and hurled with words, give me the power to forgive
When I am being taken for granted, help me to remember that you want me to serve
Help me to raise my hands to pray for those, who no not how to love and forgive
Let me pray for those who have sinned and to forgive their sins
Help me to put words of love into confused minds and darkened hearts.
Strengthen my heart to bear the shower of insults
Prepare my heart to endure suffering for others.
When I am loaded with negative thoughts fill me with your light.

O Master I have nothing that belongs to me.
What I have is your blessing alone.
The things I hold as mine are words, actions and deeds.
When I turn my senses towards you,
when my body cleansed with your blessings
I place it at your feet.
O Master, please accept my humble offerings let me never turn from your path.
Life is hard, torturous and never ending journey
But with you as my companion
I am sure to succeed.
I offer this success at your feet.
O Master, please accept this offering of mine.

Truth Ultimately Prevails

Usually we hope that justice wins in our dealing with people. Everyone believes himself to be right, and feels happy if others recognize his merits. If it is not, he feels uneasy and tries to explain atleast to himself that his motives are good even if others don’t see it, or the circumstances urged him to behave this way or other. However even after all our attempts to find excuses, we often doubt – may be not very consciously – that our justification will be successful.

If we have a glimpse of the connection with divinity through holy persons, Gurus or Ishta devatas, we have at least some understanding that our success is not ours and our failure is due to bad samskaras which have to be overcome for our own benefit - the benefit of our Real I.

Only in this way whatever we read or know about Atman or Brahman influences our mind and we become more patient developing saburi and see the hand of divinity even in the sorrows, and this understanding develops in us more and more shraddha.

For us, ordinary people with our hearts full of desire and doubts, this is the only way to feel the perpetual and blazing fire of Truth. For me, since my eyes have just started to open and see a little bit of real things this is a very beautiful way to be in touch with Truth and Sai.

Here I don’t dare to consider the power of direct spiritual experience in seeing the Truth because it is beyond my competence, but each of us can analyze our own life.

In 2007, when I met Satpathyji in Delhi, he gave me advice to start analyzing my thoughts and where they came from etc. The result of this analysis was that I finally start understanding that whatever comes to a person from outside – whether bad or good - simply clings to our inner mental waves.

So from one side, until your mind becomes stronger, it is better to avoid bad things and bad company, but if you still get involved in all these things, that is only because you have attracted them yourself. You alone are responsible for this. For me, this is one of the facets of Great Truth and I thank Sai and Guruji for it.

Today i.e., 10th Febrary, 2009, as I clicked on the "Heritage of Shirdi Sai", I found a miracle. The stories mentioned are reflecting my thoughts running in my brain. They are the problems I am currently facing. Whether I like it or not, Baba is saying to me that I have to undergo the operation, true Baba you are correct. I had a query in my mind that as I worship and pray Baba daily why I need to undergo any surgery?

Actually I am suffering from a very rare problem in my left eye (macular hole surgery) so the surgery is scheduled for me this coming Friday. The answer is as per my Karma in this birth or previous birth I have to clear it, But during this process, Sadguru Sai Nath will help me so that I undergo the surgery smoothly without any pain. He will take care that the surgery is successful. The other experience of the devotee that he would donate Rs.15,000/- and has postponed for a quite long time, is also true of my case. Baba, I will definitely donate the amount that I promised you as early as possible.

One should have true love for Baba. Nothing else is required. He will Himself give you Shradha and Saburi. It has to come from Him. Unconditional Love for Him is a must. He is there for you Always. He is the Only Light in Darkness.
