VOL64, AUGUST 2008

……“History has shown that the Divine Incarnations (Avataras), Perfect Masters (Sadgurus) and other spiritual personalities are capable of bringing about great and long term social changes at different places and at different times on this earth. Some of them like Lord Buddha, Lord Christ, Prophet Mohammad and Guru Nanak also created new religions. Others have shown new paths for betterment of the human race and spiritual evolution of the souls coming into contact with them. When they carry on their Divine and universal duties as ordained by God the Almighty they are automatically supported by the mighty and unseen powers of nature.

The possession and use of such powers is natural to them. These powers are far superior in nature to the powers that all others species, including human beings, possess. These are called 'Divya' (Divine) powers. From the word 'Divya' comes the words 'Devata' in Hinduism. While working in a human form these spiritual entities display the powers and characteristics of both human beings and Devatas as per their will and requirement. Just as the human beings have superior power and intelligence over all the other species on this earth, so also these powerful divine personalities possess superior intelligence and vast capabilities much beyond the capabilities of human beings.

As a man does not always have to think that he knows veterinary or medical science when treating an animal, similarly these Masters are not aware of their divine powers when they are helping or treating human beings and other species whether in their worldly problems or in their spiritual evolution. They use these powers spontaneously for the benefit of others without expecting any material returns. It is their magnificent quality of kindness that propels them to help others and suffer for them. On the other hand, human beings, when they come face-to-face with such mighty personalities are utterly surprised and moved to see the miraculous play of spiritual powers.

Further, the kindness with which Masters use these powers for their benefit brings forth an emotional upsurge in their hearts. This is beginning point of Bhakti. This is what used to happen to anyone and everyone who came in contact with Shri Shirdi Sai Baba when He was in His human embodiment at Shirdi. Baba's capabilities to give immediate and long-term redress to any problem of any person (both temporal and spiritual) was so vast and effective, that even the most powerful and capable personalities of that time like Khaparde, Buti, Kaka Saheb Dixit, Chandorkar etc. looked insignificant before Him.

Forgetting their material or social status they had to surrender to Him. Being totally overpowered by the personality of Shri Sai Nath Maharaj and deeply indebted to Him for His kindness, these devotees used to spread His glory. They spread the name of Baba mostly through word of mouth and through varied social interactions, whenever they got a chance to do so. Ardent devotees like Dasganu Maharaj spread His name in the rural areas of Maharashtra through kirtans, ballards and folklores.

During the period when Baba was at Shirdi (between 1860-1918), there were a very small number of newspapers and journals in Maharashtra. Study of such newspapers and magazines shows that during that time, Baba's name rarely appeared in them. After Baba left His body in 1918 “Sai Leela” an official publication (magazine) of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan came to life and this continues to be published till today. The prominent devotees of Baba like Dasganu, Chandorkar, Kaka Saheb Dixit and many others who were instrumental in spreading the name of Baba were extremely cautious and truthful in uttering or writing anything pertaining to Baba.

The two magazines, Sai Prabha (1915-1919) and Shri Sai Leela (1923 till date) were not commercial ventures. Neither the publishers, nor the editors or the writers had any commercial angle attached to it. It was out of pure love towards Baba and the real life experience they had with Him, that they wrote on their experiences in these magazines for the benefit of other devotees. They did not brag about the information they shared with others or their proximity to Baba. They did not write about any imaginary / concocted miracles. They did not indulge in bringing out competitive marketing serials based on half baked truths or speculations on Baba, as is sometimes being done in audio/video channels of today.

Today nine decades after Baba's Mahasamadhi, His name continues to spread far and wide in India and abroad. As Baba had forecast, Shirdi is thronging with devotees from all over the globe and the number is ever on the increase. Hundreds of temples have come up in His name in India and abroad. The number of commercial movies, TV serials, magazines, books, audio-video cassettes pertaining to Baba in different languages is too numerous to be listed. Stories on Baba's life, news and views on activities pertaining to the Sai movement today and experiences of devotees can be seen through these audio/video/print medias. Some of them are good.

However, what is sometimes lacking is a truthful and correct projection of Baba. Some people are perhaps not aware of the fact that a real Spiritual Master like Baba does not need a purely commercial venture to attract His devotees towards Him. By their subtle divine power, Spiritual Masters can draw any soul from any distance by their sheer will. This is what used to happen at Shirdi during Baba's time. Baba has clearly mentioned that He can draw His devotees even from beyond the seven seas whenever He willed. A true devotee who has full faith in Baba would avoid projecting Baba through imaginary or concocted stories of miracles. Such false projections sends a wrong message to the devotees and works as a hindrance in their correct appreciation of the personality of the Master, His philosophy and His teaching methods.

On this day of Guru Poornima the devotees should pray the Master to give them the correct emotional and mental capabilities to understand Him through their inner perception. The devotees should not condition their mind through whatever they read, see and hear superficially but should read Shri Sai Sat Charitra regularly and concentrate on the divine attributes (qualities) of Baba and meditate on His form. ”…….

……“ In another way also Baba granted this identity. That was in about 1916. Rege had gone to Shirdi and was staying with Ayi. When Baba was alone, he sent for him, and said, ‘The key of my treasury is now placed in your hands. Ask anything you want, Rs. 5, Rs. 100 or what you like. I will give it to you.’ This was a temptation, but Rege declined to ask for anything.

Sai Baba knew what was necessary, good or useful for Rege and it was for Baba to decide what to give or what to withhold, and not for Rege to ask. So, Rege would not ask. Then Baba held him by the chin and coaxed him to ask for something, because he was anxious to give. Then Rege said, ‘Is it agreed, Baba that you grant anything I ask for?’ ‘Yes,’ Baba answered. Rege said, ‘Then Baba I want this. In this and in any future birth that may befall me, you should never part from me. You should always be with me’. Baba was full of joy and petting him said ‘Yes, I shall be with you, inside you and outside you, whatever you may be or do’ Rege felt then and feels even that now, Baba is always with him. Baba also shows his form visibly to him occasionally to reassure him and guide him.

This statement that Baba is always with Rege, and Rege always with Baba, came from Sai Baba in a very forceful way again in 1916. On one occasion Baba showed his deep concern for M. B. Rege’s comfort and happiness. It was about a child that was the first child that Rege had. When in 1914 a child was still in the womb, both Rege and his wife went to Baba for darsan. Then Baba cryptically said, ‘You have got one of my gifts with you.’ When the child was born, it was taken to Baba. Baba then caressed it, and asked Rege, ‘Is the child yours or mine?’ ‘Yours Baba,’ replied Rege. Then Baba said, ‘Keep him with you as a charge from me.’

One might wonder, with what object this was said. Baba fully knew what the future of that child was to be and how it was to leave Rege and cause him much pain, being his very first child. A year and a half after that, the child got pneumonia, and the doctors were saying that the danger was over. But just then it started sinking. Rege took the child to the prayer room in his house and prayed to Baba. 'The child is yours, Baba. So, please take it and give it rest in you. But having given it its worldly existence, I undertake all its karma', said Rege.

Then Rege put his palm on the head of the child. There was a smile on its face, a last gasp and the crown of the head was drawn in with a hiss, just the way in which the yogis lives would depart, namely, through the crown of the head. To confirm his idea that the child had sadgati, he had an experience, a couple of months later, when he went to Shirdi. As he was in Baba’s presence, the latter asked some one, ‘Who is this man? Where does he live?’ pointing to Rege.

They said, ‘This is Rege and he lives at Indore.’ ‘No,’ said Baba, ‘You are wrong. He is always here and I am with him.’ Next Baba asked, ‘Has he any children?’ The persons present said, ‘No Baba; his child has just now died.’ Baba retorted, ‘Died? No, no. I will tell you what happened. The child was mine, and this man agreed to keep it. One day he said, "You keep him with you, and I shall take up his karma." So, I took the child and kept it here pointing to his heart’. Baba added, ‘He shall be here eternally’. Eternal with Guru-God means undoubted sadgati. That is how Baba tried to fore-warn Rege from the beginning about this loss of his first child and how he consoled him by giving the child sadgati. This being a memorable event is referred to in Sai Sahasranama in the following words: Rege Sisoh Tathandasya Sada Sadgati Dayakah.

As for worldly matters, naturally in the position of a judge, he did not have much trouble, though on account of his increasing family burdens, he had demands and burdens. But Rege never troubled Baba with prayers for worldly gain or support, for instance, as in matters of promotion. He had his income from property and insurance. He was quite content with the provision for the present and the future. If need arose, somehow money was coming in, and Rege had nothing to complain of.

Baba's kindness and provision for Rege’s welfare had no limit. Rege says that it is not possible to give out all his experiences, but about Baba’s method of communication, he gives a classification. There are three forms. The first is in the active waking state. When the sishya is in difficulties or Baba wants his sishya to take a particular course, the sishya gets an inspiration as to what course should be adopted and the feeling that it is Baba’s inspiration. That is quite enough and it is verified by the events in his own case.

When he was at Ayi’s house, he would feel that Baba called him, and would go up to the Mosque and find that Baba was actually waiting for him there. So, the inspiration really came from Baba. Baba would give him some songs to sing or some tunes, because both Baba and Rege knew music. The second relates to the sleeping or trance state. Baba would appear in dreams or trances. This would be called Sakshatkara and is considered most impressive and unmistakable. Of course Rege had Baba's Sakshatkaras. In the third method, Baba directed his sishya to go to some other person, who did not even know why the shishya was sent, but who nebertheless benefitted the shishya in accordance with Baba’s internal and unperceived guidance. Sometimes the person to whom Baba sends a devotee is totally unfit to give any reply, for instance, the rustic girl to whom Das Ganu was sent for interpreting the Isha Upanishad.”……

I have been waiting for my Australian permanent residency (PR) approval since May 2007. I have fulfilled the requirements and sorted all the documents due to Baba's grace (long story). Due to some recent financial problems in my life, I have been completely frustrated.

I was stuck in my current job for the past three years. A year ago I received a job offer for similar work but with higher pay and it was a huge decision for me so I had asked Baba through chits. Baba said "no" to it and I couldn't understand why; so I did what Baba said and stuck to my job. Then after applying for my PR, I didn't ask Baba again about changing jobs as I thought that I might as well stick to this job now until I get my PR approval.

On 21st November 2007, our employers told us that our company (in Sydney) had been bought out by a Melbourne based company. We would get a redundancy compensation package and could either join the other company in Melbourne or just find a new job. If I had quit this job I would not have received the redundancy compensation. I was a bit happy, but there was still the problem that my PR had not been approved yet so I could not go to India for vacations, nor could I apply for good jobs as a resident has better job opportunities.

Next day, 22nd November 07 (Thursday) I emailed an officer from the immigration department to check the status of my application. The officer called me back in the afternoon and told me that PR had already been granted to me on the 8th of November (Thursday) and an email was also sent to me (but I never received it). I went home to get my passport and to take it to the immigration office, which is right next to my office building. When I reached home I found a letter from my bank to say that they can increase my credit card limit if I want. I got the immigration office to stick the PR label the same day and I was overjoyed because everything was happening on a Thursday; I had been praying to Baba since a long time that it would be okay if he gives me an approval a bit late, but let the news only come on a Thursday - and it happened.

After that I went to the Sai temple, as I usually did on Thursday, and I just couldn't thank him enough for always taking care of me like a mother. My mother rang me and told me that after my father came to know about the news of my PR approval he booked a bus ticket from Mumbai to Shirdi the same night. My younger brother had also recently been to Shirdi of his own accord. Whatever reason makes us go to Shirdi makes me happy. I just thought of sharing my happiness with you all.

Aim of Life

I want fortune & fame
Is this our actual aim
I want fun & want to play
Is that the reason we get another day
God wants us to have freedom
Not for this country but from this cruel earth
That is why we have got birth
The Almighty wants us to be free
Just like a bee
We need to solve this problem fast before our days are over
And an explosion finishes the earth, which is so vast
We have got the tools
But are sitting like fools
The procedure is to find a Spiritual Master
And be free a little faster
This is true believe it or not
One day there will be a shot
And we will know
That all our births, opportunities
Given by God were a waste
Some will be free some will not be
Free I want to Be

Dedicated to the World so that they can realise that this time is very less. We need to take instant action.

One who engages only in right actions is said to be upholding the Dharma or Values. Right conduct and right actions would help him, who wants to progress in his spiritual quest. Actions form an integral part of human beings. As Lord Shri Krishna says in Bhagvad Geeta that Man does not attain freedom from action (culmination of the discipline of Action) without entering upon action; nor does he reach perfection (culmination of the discipline of knowledge) merely by ceasing to act (ch 3 : stz 4). Basically there is action even in inaction.

The four objects in a man’s life viz Dharma, artha, kama and moksha can be attained by following any one of the following paths viz, karma, dhyan, yoga and bhakti. In present context it becomes impossible to sit in one place and concentrate on God or practice yoga whereas Bhakthi or pure devotion is achieved only when a man understands the mystic and divine creation of the God. This requires knowledge and also ability to perceive God in all beings which is difficult in the present world. This leaves man with one choice, Karma. Karma is another way to reach the spiritual goal. Karma means engaging in actions which would enable a man to achieve all the four objectives in his life.

One may ask how can performing action enable a man to achieve spiritual progression? All actions that man engages in must be done consciously with the objective of helping not just himself or his kith and kin but also fellow beings. A spiritual man understands that all pain and pleasure is the act of God and that to help others and ease their pain in the time of need, share the wealth among needy and extend love beyond his family members and consider everybody to the embodiment of the Lord such person is said to behold dharma, and every action of his drives him to achieving his chief objectives in life.

Sai Satcharita tells us how to uphold dharma by right conduct; it tells us how should a man conduct himself in the world while engaging in his day to day activities. All actions of a sincere devotee arise for the purpose of following the Dharma. Dharma and Karma are two sides of the same coin and go hand in hand. Indulging in one leads to establishing the other.

In order for a man to uphold Dharma he has to take the help of his intellect and engage in actions (karma) that would enable him to act in a way to be able to establish righteousness in his life. Right action leads to right conduct which thereby establishes correct values in life. In Chapter 1 of Sai Satcharita, Hemadpant writes about Baba, who says that Knowledge or Self-realization is not possible, unless there is the prior act of grinding of all our impulses, desires, sins. The action of grinding our undesirable virtues constitutes Karma.

Sai Satcharita has the life stories of followers of Baba who in their simple love for Baba and engaging in their activities have attained the chief objectives of their life. Baba, the Lord God on this earth has set an example for His followers to act accordingly. In answer to the prayers of the sincere and humble devotees, God comes to the earth in the form of a saint to remove their problems and guide them in the right path as promised by lord Krishna in Bhagvat Geeta For the protection of the virtuous, for the extirpation of evil-does, and for establishing Dharma (righteousness) on a firm footing, I am born from age to age (Bhagvad Geeta ch 4 : Stz 8).

The trouble with man is that when he knows or learns too much he thinks he knows it all. One drawback of a learned man is his inflated pride or ego. P.K Shaw once said the trouble with the fertile mind is that the weeds grow as prolific as the pastures. The weeds, in the spiritual context are ego, pride, and anger at not being acknowledged that he is more learned than others. One might wonder, being a divine man, Baba could have sat at one place without having to indulge in any action but why did He not do so?

What is the purpose behind such an action from Baba? The answer is simple, Baba wanted to set an example for His followers that one has to indulge in action in order to achieve the spiritual goal. Also Baba wanted to teach His followers that one should use intelligence to discriminate from right action from wrong and always consciously serve Baba by serving His children. Events in the life of Baba, as depicted in Sai Satcharita remind us that one should remain unperturbed in the face of adverse situations, Baba was called a mad fakir, He was stoned, and when He went to collect oil from shopkeepers to light the lamps in His masjid, they refused to give any oil. Inspite of all these hurdles Baba moved not an inch from His routine. He did what He was doing everyday. Of course being a divine satpurusha, He was able to light the lamps with water.

Sai Satcharita shows that if one were sincere in devotion and love towards Guru or God then all the powers of the God will come to such a person without him striving for them. Baba also showed us how to conduct oneself as a devotee and as a disciple in the story of Pseudo-Guru Javhar Ali who was puffed with pride about his learnedness and even called Baba his disciple. Baba knew the defects of the so called Guru, still He never disrespected him, observing carefully His duties. He even served the Master in various ways. This shows the humility and simplicity of Baba. In order for a man to achieve the highest goal in life one has to be humble and sincere in their quest for truth.

Our actions (prarabdha karma) performed today form the basis of the life we lead tomorrow or in next birth. All the examples in Sai Satcharita point us to one direction - that Karma has a priority in our spiritually quest. Doing right actions would enable us to uphold right values.

Baba bless us and guide us always in doing right actions to uphold dharma.

It is so many years since Shri Shirdi Sai Baba attained samadhi and still we are experiencing His compassion and love as much as His devotees of those days experienced. He is a guiding force in the lives of all Sai devotees. The fact that there are so many Sai temples in India and all over the world and so many devotees meeting on the platform of Sai consciousness on this website shows how Baba is with us at every step we take.
