....."A few examples from the lives of Saints will perhaps give a better perception.

Take for example, the relationship of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Shri Vivekananda. Shri Vivekananda was an English educated rationalist with certain amount of skepticism during his early period of life. Shri Ramakrishna knew about his inner potentials and drew him near to him. Shri Ramakrishna had reportedly told Vivekananda that once he (Vivekananda) realized who he really was, he would not remain in his physical body.

What Shri Ramakrishna indicated was that Shri Vivekananda was a spiritually advanced soul who had come with a human body for a divine purpose and once the purpose was fulfilled he will realize his original state and quit the body. During the process of his evolution, Shri Vivekananda rendered spiritual help to many persons even when he was not conscious of his own original divine state.

He was the ‘charge man’ of Shri Paramahamsa and spread his message all the world over through his famous speech in the World Parliament of Religions in 1893 at Chicago. After Shri Paramahamsa left his mortal body, Shri Vivekananda spread his message all over and set-up institutions to propagate the Vedic knowledge all over the globe. Having fulfilled the purpose of his divine incarnation Shri Vivekananda left his body at an early age just like the Adi Shankara or Christ.

Relating from the history of Shirdi Sai, Shri Upasani Maharaj was drawn by Shri Sai with a purpose. Shri Upasani Maharaj never knew that he was to be the main disciple and ‘charge man’ of Shri Sainath. But Shri Sai announced before everyone at Shirdi that he weighed Shri Upasani Maharaj on one side and the whole world on the other-side of the spiritual scale.

Such is the love of the Sadguru that he took over the entire responsibility of Upasani Maharaj, inspite of protests from and jealousy of many other devotees who thought that Upasani Baba did not deserve all that attention from Shri Sai Baba. Shri Sai controlled the life of Shri Upasani Maharaj so closely that when the later wanted to go back to his home, he was forced, under strange circumstances to return to Shirdi within eight days as Sai Baba had predicted.

Similarly Sadguru Shri Lokanath Brarnhachari of Baridi (now in Bangladesh) had pulled his main disciple Shri Bijay Krishna Goswami by strange methods and evolved him to the state of a Guru in the late 19th Century. Life history of Sufi Saints is full of such instances.

These are only a few examples but the Sadgurus always play the same or similar role with other disciples at various stages of development. These disciples when evolved also play the same or similar roles with their disciples. Thus the Guru lineage goes on and on.

The inner motivation, methods of action of the disciple of the Sadguru cannot be completely understood by any body else than the Sadguru who has taken over the entire responsibility of such devotee. All other persons including his family members and closest relatives cannot understand the value of this disciple.

The world may or may not be able to recognize his inner virtues and may even discard him, but the Sadguru who is the ‘Antar-Sakshi’ (the witness of his inner self), always loves him and stands by him. Gradually this disciple comes to realize the limitations of human love and the illusions of the worldly games and totally surrenders to his Guru - the spring of eternal love. He has no choice; once he is chosen by the Sadguru.".......

Q & A

Many people give us trouble. Should we not punish them?

Who are we to award the consequence to anybody for his doings? In the ultimate analysis this lies with God only. Everybody will bear the consequence of his or her actions. Many a times a human being misconceives himself of being the giver of justice to others in terms of punishments and rewards. Justice is delivered by God only. Because of our limited intellect we think that we are being subjected to injustice by somebody.

However, in the ultimate reality, we don’t understand that we had also committed similar injustice towards somebody in the past. Many times we become proud of our strength and capability and try to turn the situations in our favour with selfish interest. If one wields power then that should be used to conquer one’s own self. If one wants to emerge victorious then one should conquer those causes due to which enmity and aggression arises in heart.

No matter how much of hardship comes in life, one should bear the brunt of the circumstances or results of his actions with forbearance. It needs great amount of inner strength to be generous towards those whom we consider to be our enemies. Today, if we save ourselves from some aggression, tomorrow there will be a new set of aggressions. Thus, we will be left entangled in a cycle of cause and effect. If we punish someone today, he will punish us in next life. If we excuse, this chain of reactions also ends.

……“So, Baba wanted to make him feel (firstly) divinity more and more in Baba and (secondly) the fact that Baba’s divinity is not confined to the Baba body but extends to all creatures as Baba is their Antaryami or soul or self. These two are closely connected. Baba said, ‘I am not at Shirdi alone. I am in all creatures, in the ant, etc’. Intellectually this was understood, but at heart, Nana did not realise it. Baba wanted him to realise it more vividly, as that was very important for higher spiritual progress.

So on one occasion, when Nana came up, Baba told him to prepare 8 pooran polis (cakes) for naivedya and then take his food. When Nana placed before Baba eight pooran polis, Baba did not touch them, but flies sat on them. Then Baba asked Nana to take away the prasad (i.e. remnant of food which Guru had first tasted). Nana insisted that Baba should eat some.

Baba said that he had eaten. ‘When?’ asked Nana. Nana said, ‘All the eight polis are there’. Baba said he had eaten it at some time. Then Nana got vexed and went away to the chavadi. When Baba sent for him, the same conversation was repeated. Finally Baba told Nana, ‘I say you have been living with me for 18 years now. Is this all your appraisal of me? Does Baba mean to you only the 3 1/2 cubits height of this body? Am I not in the fly and the ant that settled upon the polis?’

Nana said that he knew that, but could not realise it. If Baba could make him realise it, Nana said, he would take and eat the polis as prasad. Then Baba lifted his hand and made a gesture. He thereby revealed a secret which Nana was hiding very deep in his heart; and Nana discovered that Baba knew the secret. How? The only explanation was that Baba was the antaryami or the inmost soul in his heart.

If Baba was his antaryami, he must be the antaryami of the fly and the ant also. So he agreed to take the pooran poli as prasad, and was satisfied. Then Baba told him, ‘As you see the gesture I make, you must remember that I am in all creatures’. Thus Baba gave him a very valuable lesson and took him up one very important rung of the ladder, that is, realising God in one form after another and not confining Him to the object worshipped at home or in a temple.

Baba had to teach several other valuable lessons, most of which are embodied in the Gita. When Nana was cross-examined about the Gita sloka, he finally prayed that Baba should teach him the gist of the Gita. Baba told him to come up everyday, after going through part of the Gita, and to sit at his feet. Then when Nana did so, all that he had read in the Gita flashed as realisation in his heart. This is what is mentioned by the Svetasvataropanishad, last stanza, namely,

yasya deve para bhaktih, yata deve tatha gurow
tasyaite kathita hyarthaah prakaascante mahaatmanah

This means, ‘To him who has intense faith in God and equally intense faith in his Guru, (to that Great Soul), these truths of the Upanishads (about realisation of Brahman) will shine forth’. Nana had full faith in Baba, and, as he sat before Baba, the full gist of the Gita, chapter by chapter, flashed before his heart and helped him to realisation.”……

My Money, My Wealth BUT Where am I?

Most of us are familiar with Kabirdas’s famous book ‘Bijak’ (The Seedling) which has carried many messages for us to live peacefully without worries. One oft quoted message to mock the lazy is ‘Ajgar kare na chakri, panchi kare na kaam, Das Maluka kahe gaye, Sabke data Rama’. Yet the words are so true to explain those strange ways in which the unseen divine forces provide for us irrespective of our work or wealth.

Our universe contained beautiful things such as the youthful rivers, sensuous forests, melodic birds, indefatigable ants, colorful bees and gliding butterflies, playful animals and innocent but clueless human beings. Slowly but speedily the world became place where people were grabbing for money which distanced them from this pristine purity of existence.

Everyone seems to be running after money, accumulating as much as one can, arranging for its protection and multiplication, also policing against its loss. So pervasive was the impact of wealth upon the human psyche that families as much as the nations came to be divided based on the amount of wealth they were able to generate, invest and flaunt.

What in fact is the source of this wealth? Most people find it easy to answer this by saying that it comes from my job, my shop, my business, my prudence and my investments but few know that there is only one distribution centre for all of us irrespective of our race, religion, caste, gender, creed and beliefs.

The famous urdu poet Allama Iqbal reminded that Allah is showering rizk even to the tiny insect hiding beneath stones but human beings out of ignorance keep attributing all wealth and achievement to themselves. Well, even I do not know if this is true and thus do not possess any right to be sermonizing without proof but many experiences shared by others confirm that it is absolutely true.

Wealth is earned and accumulated to serve a particular ambition in life like marriage of a daughter, building a house, starting a business, career of children etc. What if a prince charming arrives at your door on a white horse to ask for your daughter’s hand without money or demands!

What if your children get fellowships as they land in a university and need your wealth no more, what if a failing distraught and debt ridden hospital owner sells his whole hospital with expensive machines to one of his doctor employees for ten dollars to declare himself bankrupt, what if the recovery agent from a credit card company knocks at your door to say that the company condones the balance payment, what if your irresponsible child gets a shock to see a very high percentage of marks on the mark sheet and what if you want a feast and a friend drops in to take you out! These are real life instances shared by a number of people where wishes are fulfilled without the use of accumulated wealth.

However, everyone is not lucky enough to get this respite from the maddening rush for wealth gratification. Since life’s processes are not too difficult to understand and learn from hence it can be seen that life is like a mirror; one gets only what one is able to give. Kabir in ‘Bijak’ repeatedly takes us back to this thought in his many couplets, ‘You have the mirror in your heart but the face you cannot find, You can see the visage there if you dispel the doubts of mind.’

At another place he says, ‘If you want to see the face you must keep the mirror clean…’ Hence, in this simple life which we complicate by not being able to see loud and clear messages from the Lord that our universe is but one ecosystem and a cycle of deeds. Suffering is optional but one makes it mandatory out of ignorance. People prefer to live their lives without any smile on their faces or happiness in their hearts as they are constantly in competition for wealth and power. Would Almighty like to see a face without the ornament of smile?

There is a divine accounting system which is flawless in keeping track of every individual’s revenue collections and expenditures. The Chief Accountant has a value attached to every philanthropic activity borne out of compassion to the voiceless creatures of God. The sacrifice in terms of time, money, bodily pleasures and self-gratifying activities keeps adding to one’s revenue even though the wealth in the banks may be reducing.

This is why Sai Baba has, in various ways, suggested that one should feed the stray animals, plant trees for the nesting of birds and squirrels, prevent violence and killing of the helpless, voiceless and muted creatures both humans and animals. He has even said that most of them around you or those coming to you are related to you from your past lives so be kind to them.

Most parents who after being converted into money machines themselves, then try to impress their ideology on the clean minds of their children also. Their catch phrases are, ‘save and learn to save’, ‘what worth are you without wealth and career’? These parents have a very limited understanding of excellence and are never able to link it to what is actually the sustainable wealth generation.

Many acts which bring excellence are abhorred such as, the child has the natural instinct to help the injured dog on the road, the parent pulls him inside the car to say, ‘what a waste of time stupid’. The child understands the language of the starving stray dog standing at the door but is directed by the elder, ‘stay away, he is dangerous, carrier of rabies’; a cow meekly pleads to be fed with her shivering calf but the ignorant passerby hits her with a stone. While there is so much wealth in the world, there is so much less left for the human beings to use.

There is another angle to wealth accumulation through wrong means and without deeds of compassion towards fellow creatures. A plumber deceitfully charged rupees four thousand more than the legitimate cost but soon after fell sick and spent the whole amount at the doctor’s clinic. A man brutally kicked the stray dog but the same week his toe nail was scraped off and he was put to the same amount of pain.

A maid servant working in the house of a very old and disabled woman staying alone, stole her gold ornaments for her marriage and ran away. One year later the news came back that she was sold by her husband to a brothel in Midnapore in West Bengal but the ornaments were recovered when the husband was caught in suspicion for smuggling cows across the Barashaat border in West Bengal. All these are true stories shared by victims themselves. It is good to understand that the accumulation through wrong means is a temporary illusion of gain but only what is justiciably earned has the potential to stay and multiply.

Thus, wealth has to be generated and multiplied by supporting the needy and not by cost-benefit calculations of transactions in money and property. The Principal giver being ‘Sai’ and His support transcending the accumulated wealth in the banks will hold our hands whenever one needs wealth for a purpose.

All of what one aspired to achieve through wealth accumulated over the years of worries, strategic planning and manipulation is finally concluded without money simply because of one’s philanthropic records with Sai Ram. Out of ignorance we continue to be corrupt in the generation and management of our wealth in terms of property and bank balance and hence stand isolated as a pauper on the day of deliverance despite some of us being called the richest man from the Forbes list of billionaires!

Shirdi Baba came in my dream and told me to spread his miracles, so I have listed a few miracles that I have personally experienced.

1) I was recently on holiday in Spain for about two weeks. I was feeling really miserable. I had a strong desire to pray to Baba in a mandir, but being in a foreign country in new surroundings I felt really distant from Baba. The next day, I was out shopping and went into shop and started talking to the owner of the shop. I suddenly noticed that he was wearing a Shirdi Baba ring and so started to talk to him about Baba.

He told me about Sai Baba mandir close by and I felt really excited. I made a trip to that place the next day and could not find it, so decided to go into the hotel to ask for directions. I expected to find a reception desk with people, whom I could ask about the mandir, but instead to my surprise, I was in a beautiful hall with a huge murti of Shirdi Baba, it was so peaceful and so beautiful.

There was no one else there, and I felt that I had a one to one darshaan with Shirdi Baba in a wonderful mandir, and that Baba, being omnipresent had fulfilled my desire of wanting to come and pray to Him in such a wonderful way.

2) I had been given a copy of Sai Satcharita and was told that if you read it in week with a desire in mind, it gets fulfilled. The first time I read Sai Satcharita in a saptah, i.e. one week, I had something in my mind that I wanted and I hoped that Baba would somehow bless me. I started it on Friday and completed it on Thursday. That night the most beautiful thing happened, Baba actually came in my dream and blessed me. It was amazing.

3) I had an exam for which I had done no preparation and I knew that it would not go well and was my worst subject. I tried to prepare for it the night before but ended up falling asleep. That night I got a dream where Maata Bhagwaan came and told me to read a certain page of my book. I woke up the next morning really pleased with my vision and quickly crammed that page. To my surprise, in the exam, the question was from that exact same page. It was a miracle!

Baba, my Deva bless me with Thy grace
Through the trials and ordeals I face
May I be merged with patience and faith
And may more love for you in me grow

The devil is playing with my mind
Help me Father, to be rid of this maya
Purify my sight , help me to get an insight
And help me adapt to the way you want me to be

Help me to not walk astray
Stabilize my emotions and help me be Kind to everyone
For the joy that I receive from you
Gives me willingness to fight the rival in me

Your assurances and your Nirakara roopa
Stand by my side
And I find you reciprocating my prayers Through your loving face,
As Thy strong hand lifts me from despair
Nevertheless I hope to get there

I need you Baba, all the time
You have never ever let me fear
In spite of my bitter moments and challenging times
You were always there
Cleaning me from my sins
Unfortunately Baba I misunderstood you
More of Thy will, I long to seek
Less of self, help me be cherubic and meek

Stupid that I am I always mourned
For the materialistic riches and searched for impermanent permanence
And yet I did not realize that I would find you
Day in and day out
in the life that I lead.

Baba, help me trod on for the road seems dark
Each step taken will leave a mark
I see you in the help you extend and
Of late learnt that you are in every obstacle
I know not what the future may hold
Days could be warm, or dreary and cold
But Lord, may I always remember thy blessings
For they are the one constant that always come my way

God created Man in his own image. If we take Man and God separately it would mean denying oneness of the universe. Ik Onkar, Sabka Malik Ek, All is One, God, Father & Son are one would lose its meaning. There is no separation or boundary between a Man and God. In our ignorance, we feel we are separate and God is sitting somewhere far away beyond the clouds and sky, somewhere deep in Universe which is not true.

Ancient Hindu scriptures have been telling us that the only way to reach God is by going inwards. God cannot be found outside. He can be felt inside us. This is the reason why human birth is considered so sacred. Because it is Man who can actually learn, feel and ultimately experience God – nowhere outside but inside his body temple – in the state of complete thoughtlessness.

Scientists have proved that the tiniest part of this creation is vibration, which they have not been able to break down further. This vibration forms electron, proton and neutron, which in turn form atom, which form molecules… and so on. This vibration is nothing but energy - an intelligent form of energy, which has a life and existence of its own.

We call it as pure consciousness because it is not visible but this ‘space’ is there which is always vibrating at a very high speed and produces celestial sound. When this consciousness condenses it becomes matter and thus become visible. Denser the condensation, solid is the matter. Man is one such visible form of matter, who has got five senses to see, smell, taste, touch and hear everything related to matter around him. He forgets to go inwards where God would be revealed to him.

God /Universe/ Brahman is that pure consciousness which cannot be seen but has to be felt and experienced. It is that Divine Universal Life Force Energy which runs the show of the world. It is like that tiny dry seed which contains a huge big tree hidden in it. The seed turns into tree only when certain conditions are satisfied – it gets support of five elements – water, air, earth, ether and fire (sun). We cannot say that tree is separate from the seed. They are one and the same.

Behind every act, there is an intention. When we worship we have to be sure why we are worshipping. Is it mere ritual that we are doing? Is it being done with the desire to please and get some reward in return? Highest form of worship is that which is done to find an answer to our own identity? Who am I? When a man starts questioning himself about his own origin, God starts to reveal himself to man. God symbolizes knowledge.

When a man gets into self inquiry mode, he first understands that he is not body but soul. Soul is nothing but energy which runs this human body, which makes this body think, analyse, act and thus leave deep impressions in his astral Body for further action. When a soul leaves body, the physical body becomes useless and is therefore discarded even by the relatives of that man. The impressions that humans accumulated in the lifetime get carried forward to next lifetime to learn new lessons. Lessons once learnt need not be learnt again.

We should worship God to know Him. To know Him means to remove layers of ignorance of our intellect. As layers are removed, knowledge shines bright, God starts becoming visible, the mysteries are solved. Suddenly everything becomes crystal clear that there is no difference between Man and God. At the deepest level all is vibration. Hinduism philosophy is all about experiencing this ultimate truth. An ordinary human knows all this in theory. We are supposed to think about it, meditate, contemplate upon and assimilate this theory continuously.

When there is duality because of ignorance, one sees all things as distinct from the Self. Sankara the great monist has written that when everything is known as the Self not even an atom is seen as other than the Self. As soon as knowledge of the Reality has sprung up, there can be no fruits of past actions to be experienced, owing to the unreality of the body, just as there can be no dream after waking i.e, Ekam Sat (only one exists). Maya is nothing but dualistic cosmic delusion, which makes us think that Man is separate and God is separate.

Sadguru guides us gently, uplifts us internally, removes the layers of Maya from our vision and brings us face to face with both – form and formless - aspect of God. Each soul has to experience this truth and realize God in Self. So either way we go, whomsoever we worship first – God or Man, if our intentions are to satisfy the thirst of our soul to know its actual source, we will reach the same destination. Man is creation of God. When we worship man we worship God because in this way we are acknowledging our love and respect for the creator with an attitude of gratitude.

Sai Baba is one such Sadguru who took human birth to reveal these mysteries of Universe/ Brahman/ God to those earnest devotees who really wanted to know thy Self. The man is visible aspect of God who is invisible to human eye. Sai Baba has advised us to try both the ways (worship of Form or Formless) whichever is suitable to us as under:

“To get the knowledge (realization) of the self, dhyan (meditation) is necessary. If you practice it continuously, the vrittis (subtle thoughts) will be pacified. Being quite desireless, you should meditate on God, who is in all the creatures and when the mind is concentrated, the goal will be achieved. Meditate always on My formless Nature, which is knowledge incarnate, consciousness and bliss.

If you cannot do this, meditate on My Form from top to toe, as you see there night and day. As you go on doing this, your vrittis will be single pointed, and the distinction between the Dhyatat (meditator), Dhyana (act of meditation), Dhyeya (thing meditated upon) will be lost, and the meditator will be one with the consciousness and be merged in the Brahma (Universe/God)…..This way always remember and meditate on the Lord, Who will manifest Himself to you”.

Sai Baba has also told his devotees to “Demolish the wall of difference that separate you from Me, and then the road for our meeting will be clear and open. The sense of differentiation as I and thou, is the barrier that keeps away the disciple from his Master and unless that is destroyed the state of union or atonement is not possible i.e, God is the sole Proprietor”. Here ‘Me’ does not mean physical body of Sai Baba but the pure consciousness –the formless Self in the body.

Thus disregard of His creation would be disregard of God. So when all is One, we can start our worship from any direction, either Man (form) or God (formless), we will ultimately reach the same destination of Self realization, that is, – Sabka Malik Ek - All is One – the state where a Man sees all beings in the Self and sees the self as existing in all being, for whom all beings and everything that exists have become the Self.

Baba’s Teachings and Related Values

1. God lives in all beings. He who sees Me in all beings and creatures is my beloved. – Kindness.

2. Ram and Rahim were one and the same. There was not the slightest difference between them. Then why should their devotees fall out and quarrel among themselves. Join hands and bring both the communities together.- National Unity.

3. Yoga, Sacrifice, penance and knowledge are the means to attain God. If you do not succeed in this by any means, in vain is your birth.- Devotion

4. If anyone does any evil unto you, do not retaliate. If you can do anything do some good unto others.- Forgiveness.

5. Baba advised that before the senses, mind and intellect enjoy their objects first He should be remembered and if this be done, it is in a way by making an offering to Him. If this practice be followed the Lord will help us in eradicating thoughts like anger, desire, lust and greed and we would not want to offer such thoughts to our Guru. - Purity Of Mind.

6. Baba said he who wants to get rid of the cycle of births and deaths should lead a righteous life with his mind calm and composed. – Righteousness

7. Baba advised that nobody should take the labour of others in vain. The worker should be paid his dues promptly and liberally.- Good Remuneration

8. Baba distributed udi (ashes) to teach us that all the visible phenomena in the universe are as transient as the ash. Our bodies composed of matter of the five elements, will be reduced to ashes.- Discrimination Between Real And Unreal

9. Baba asked for dakshina from His devotees to teach them that non-attachment towards wealth will help them to have rapid progress in spirituality.-Detachment.

Principles Of Sai Path

1. Shradha

2. Saburi

1. Shradha - Faith with love and reverence.

Baba’s teaching, both direct and indirect explicate the significance of ‘SHRADHA’. Baba reiterates the spiritual guidance of Shri Krishna to Arjuna-“Who-so-ever offer to me with love or devotion, a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, that offering of pure love is readily accepted by me”.

2. Saburi- Patience and Perseverance.

As a hunter waits patiently and motionlessly for his target a devotee too has to wait patiently for attaining his goal. There are many trying situations in life. A test may come in the form of frustration, distress, agony, illness, mishaps, prolonged wait or a loss. In such moments we should seek support from our Guru and hold onto him.

Synthesis of thought and reason, how much can one think and how much can one reason, for both have limits, when limits are crossed both leave us we reach void, into the abyss of nothingness, we leave the journey of shackles of self, to explore selflessness, that gives the meaning, desires has a limit desireless ness has the enlightenness for all thoughts are left behind and march on thoughtlessly, and that thought free state is the birth of divinity.

Once you conquer your fears, you conquer your life. Fear is nothing more than a monster you have created, a negative stream of consciousness; once you master your body, mind and character happiness and abundance will flow into your life almost magically work on yourself. I thought of Sai and message of shirdi appears on screen why fear when I am here? Embrace the present, practise gratitude, grow your destiny I have met you so shall meet you again.

Dear Baba,

With each passing day let my heart be filled with your love, let my life be filled with your grace. Remove the greed, anger, hurt and disappointment that have weakened my heart. Cover the weak heart with armor of your love, let compassion, empathy, and love for you and for yours flow through my arteries. Let me always yearn to please you, and walk the path dearer to you.

Help me to be strong and unmoved by the passing events of this world, let me ignore the temptations thrust in my path. When I am tired and have run out of energy both mentally and physically hold me close to your heart. When I am insulted give me strength to march ahead knowing that you love me and help me remember that words do not hurt when my ears are tuned towards your songs.

God when you give me strength to overcome all the situations in the world make sure that my heart has room to feel pain of others and extend a hand to share their grief and walk along with them in their worries. Help me knock my pride, and let these eyes always seek you in every person I come across in my life.

If it were not for the hope of beholding you in front of my eyes, I would rather be blind, and ears be deaf and my heart be hardened to feelings of love. It is you I seek in every passing moment and it is you I cherish when I hold hands of others in the hope of pleasing you to gain your grace. With every passing hurdle in my life, let my love towards grow many folds for I know it is you who is drawing me nearer to you and moving me away from the passions of this world.

Listen to this prayer of mine on this day O Lord.
